It’s Too Dark, Puffling board book by Erika McGann and me was part of the fabulous autumn launch from @theobrienpress at @hodgesfiggis amazing Dawson Street shop yesterday.

Erika also has two stunning new picture books out now … Nowhere for a ghost to sleep illustrated by @clivemcf and Swim little otter with Tom McCaughren and illustrated by @shannonberginart

As always, a great variety of new titles for children this season.

Lovely to catch up with fellow illustrators and authors and of course the stellar team at OBP.

Nibbles galore and great fun to see each book on the stairs and having its own bag of sweets! #nomnomnom

So many distillations of POWER explored by all the speakers at this year’s fab as always @kidsbooksirel conference.

Very happy to have a signed copy of @emily_gravett ‘s hilarious new book Don’t feed the Troll. Fascinating insights into her career and process.

Many many thanks to all involved 😊
Loved all the chats, drinks, cake n donuts.
Until next time!

In What’s That SpOOky Sound? there is a red deer, Ireland’s largest native mammal.

Contrasting the teeny pygmy shrew with him helped emphasize her courage and bravery. They are of course the best of friends.

Some roughs, to dummies, to finals here of some pages with the red deer.

It’s great fun at events talking to kids about the differences between these two animals. Sizes, sounds and poos too!

A pymgy shrew is the tiny hero in my recent book What’s That Spooky Sound?

The first image here is the final illustration in the book.
Followed by various roughs, dummies and early testings.

Before I even knew it might be a book I’d painted her sitting on a jay flying over a forest. Not knowing how she got there...
So it was a matter somehow of making that happen : )

It’s Too Dark, Puffling by Erika McGann and me is also available as a boardbook from @theobrienpress

We have adapted the text and images for the very, very young.
All fitting just right into this gorgeous square format with 18 pages inside the covers.

These pics show some #boardbook pages beside the original #picturebook

Reading to children right from the very start leads to all the best things 😊

A baby puffling is afraid of his burrow.
‘The dark is too dark for me,’ he says.
Can the other island animals help him
to see the magic of nighttime?

Here are a couple of spreads from rough to dummy book to final for What’s That SpOOKy Sound? Published by @theobrienpress

A highlight for me of making #picturebooks, and probably for any illustrator, is the very very start with teeny scribbled scrawly notions.

It’s been great fun to read and draw from the book at events.

Thanks to anyone who came along and for all the fab feedback so far 😊

So many stunning pieces at the current exhibition Rembrandt to Matisse - A Celebration of European Works on Paper at the @nationalgalleryofireland Print Gallery.

It’s free to visit!

Members of @illustratorsireland also had a curated viewing in the Prints and Drawing Room, of several pieces by the exquisitely talented and inventive Harry Clarke and some contemporaries.

Harry’s work simply beams on forever, whether in glass or on paper, and it was fascinating to learn a little of his techniques and how the pieces are cared for so diligently by the gallery.
