What do a SWAT hostage negotiator, the former CEO of Tinder, and a Minister of Finance have in common?

They’re all our Season 2 guests on the Gentle Power podcast.

@hapki.alex and I are professional negotiators. On the show, we talk with people who’ve negotiated everything from job offers to hostage standoffs about how they use power, and what we all can learn from their experiences.

I recently gave a masterclass in negotiations to 200 graduate students at MIT.

It was very meaningful walking back into the same classroom where I once learned from world-class professors, this time returning as a negotiations expert, rather than a student.

I led two focused hours on applied negotiation, including quizzes, live exercises, real practice, and learning important first principles-based negotiation strategies. We also had a grounded discussion on where Al supports negotiations and where it falls short.

Thank you to the SCM department for hosting me! taken in MIT Stata Center by @gerta.yes

Our company, YourNegotiations.com, was recently featured in Times Square!

It’s still hard to believe we built a 6-figure bootstrapped business from 0 to 1 in about a year.

If you know us, you know we like to share things as they are and not sugarcoat. So we will say, founder life is not all rainbows and butterflies. 🦋

It often feels like we’re operating a machine in the dark, and at any moment, with one wrong move, we could crash it to the ground and it will disappear.

What keeps us going is how rewarding it is to help people have a better future by negotiating their job offers and earning more money.

I hope we can continue to do what we do for years to come so we can help more people, and, selfishly, because we enjoy doing that so much.

🙌 Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us along the way. Every moment of guidance, every intro, every bit of help along the way is what got us here.

Special thank you to @derekkohn for the absolutely stunning website and genius logo design.

Thank you @jakefleshner for the intros to amazing people!

Thank you @davidmeirsiegel for your mentorship!

Thank you to all of our business partners + those who refer us clients for believing in us: @coachnancychu, @lorraineklee, @jeanhkang, @christinawpan, @baretruth_, @laurenmcgoodwin of @careercontessa, @femkedotdesign, @irungracepace, @brendan_aronson, @careerhannah, @lucid_shift_coaching, and many more! Thank you @eden_denzil and @ Joseph Ciliberto for partnering with us to help scale our business beyond ourselves!

And thanks to @brexhq for featuring us!

We couldn’t have done it without all of you.

Today marks 10 yrs married with @gerta.yes. She always promised that our life together would not be boring, and when I look back on this decade, she was right as always. I couldn’t be more blessed to have a life partner whose mission is to invest in my dreams. Can’t wait for the next decade and beyond 🎈🎈 taken in San Francisco, California by @gerta.yes

She was born into one of Europe’s largest pharmaceutical empires. And was told to just look nice, stay quiet, follow the blueprint. She went to build at refugee camps instead.

Our latest Gentle Power guest, Paula Schwarz, curates co-living spaces in castles around the world where people who’d never normally meet end up building things together, and the house managers are mostly refugees. She is Germany’s own Paris Hilton!

This episode covers refugee camps, ID systems, Molotov cocktails, Burning Man at 8 months pregnant, and even reassurance that Paula does not own a gun. Probably the most thrilling episode we’ve had to-date! Don’t miss it.

If your term sheet negotiation felt easy, you probably left something on the table.

Alex and Gerta are hosting a panel as part of TECH WEEK by a16z: Negotiations for Founders. They’ll talk about negotiating with your cofounder, negotiating term sheets, and pricing and closing business deals.

There’s time at the end for a Q&A, and the event will NOT be recorded. So bring questions from real deals you’ve faced, those are the fun ones.

Thank you to Hyperspell for offering their beautiful office!

If you’ll be in SF, the RSVP link is in bio. See you there!

We just had Grace Ling on the Gentle Power podcast, and it was such a joy! We had so much fun chatting with her and learning from her on her episode that we offered her to stay and interview together attorney Alex Daniels on an emergency episode discussing the Meta layoffs of 8,000 people.

We talked about severance package negotiations, protected classes, and beyond. And we also asked Alex Daniels some lighthearted questions, which is what you see here.

Grace’s episode is coming soon. The emergency episode is out now. Link in bio 🔗 taken in Facebook Menlo Park, Menlo Park by @gerta.yes

Continuing on our recent episode on the Gentle Power Podcast. We interviewed Jim Lose, the CEO of @themilitaryvet, a recruiting firm that places veteran executives into high-growth companies.

He shares some insights and tips, including on communication and how to command a room from his days in the Marine Corps.

Discussing power & negotiations with a former Intelligence Officer who supported 500+ marines,
worked with the CIA, DIA, NSA, & was authorized to call the White House Situation Room

He once had authorization to call the White House Situation Room. At 25 years old.

Then he got out of the Marines and had to negotiate his first salary like everyone else.

We had the privilege of interviewing Jim Lose on the Gentle Power Podcast, who spent years as a Marine Corps intelligence officer briefing the Commandant of the Marine Corps on threats facing the entire Corps. Then he got out and had to figure out how to ask for a raise.

That gap is more common than people think. The military trains you to execute, lead, and pass the credit down. It does not train you to sit across from a hiring manager and advocate for yourself. But honestly, most careers don’t. You get good at the job. Nobody teaches you how to price yourself.

Jim has spent 20+ years on the other side of that table, placing thousands of veterans into corporate roles via @themilitaryvet. He knows exactly where people leave money behind and why.
