One of the questions we get asked the most is: how many back and forths are there in a typical negotiation?

Spoiler: there’s no magic number but there are some magic words!

(Sorry for the cliffhanger! You’ll need to watch the episode on our YouTube channel, Gentle Power). : )

If you’re not preparing for job offer negotiations BEFORE you even apply to a job, you may not realize that:

👉 even the earliest-stage company has far more resources than you do.

At minimum, they have cofounders, investors, advisors, lawyers, consultants, and they have capital to get access to expensive but stat sig market data (not whatever you can find for free on the internet).

⚠️ And even still, every week we have companies ask us to help them negotiate against job applicants (we, of course, say no).

And we have venture capital firms ask us to help them negotiate against founders (we, of course, say no).

This is why we do what we do. We want to even the playing field and ensure the “underdog” has a fair chance.

You don’t have to work with us, but please take your negotiations seriously.

“I’m happy at my current job. Win me over.”

I have clients who have been approached by exciting opportunities when they weren’t looking for a job. And now they want to negotiate.

You know the absolute best leverage in job offer negotiations is having another offer. But what about when you’re happy at your current job? That feels like a solid leverage. Is it?

🎙️ @hapki.alex and I discuss this topic on episode 31 of our podcast, Gentle Power, wherever you get your podcasts.

Today marks 10 yrs married with @gerta.yes. She always promised that our life together would not be boring, and when I look back on this decade, she was right as always. I couldn’t be more blessed to have a life partner whose mission is to invest in my dreams. Can’t wait for the next decade and beyond 🎈🎈
