Graduation behavior & two awards! 😂

4 years ago, I decided to pursue master degree. I knew I want to learn something completely new from what I have worked before. To have new perspectives so I can come back working in arts and culture more refreshed.

In 2022, through midnight random searches, I found this “Master of Behavioral and Decision Sciences” program at Penn. It is a STEM program, but when I looked at the subjects, I felt like those courses are things that I need for my work, like Organizational Behavior and Groups & Networks. I can also take any electives from the university, which later, an advantage I am most grateful for, because I can balance the sciences with classes such as art history about liberation in Arab world, philanthropy, computer vision for visual studies, and anthropology of futurity — courses from best professors in the fields.

In early 2023, I submitted my application essay. I got waitlisted, which I knew later, because I came with art background. But a month later, I was accepted to the program. I couldn’t find a scholarship in time back then, as I couldn’t afford this Ivy League institution myself. I requested a Zoom meeting with the academic advisor to ask for deferral, which turned out to be a life changing Zoom ever. Cx Timon, the advisor, turned out to be such a cool person and also artist. Our meeting became a talk to discuss art and life, that we realized we were like switching our studies, from art to behavioral science and vice versa. Then, as I asked for deferral, they said “Deferral is rarely granted, but for you, I’ll give it. I want you to be here”. For that, I am forever grateful ❤️ In 2024, I got @lpdp_ri

To my surprises, now, I got to bring home 2 awards & yay to GPA 3.92!

I’m thankful for the amazing professors whom I met here, who really inspire me about ways to teach and made me excited about subjects that I felt intimated at first, and those whom I felt genuinely support my progress as student and can be friends for life. Thank you for making me feel safe asking “dumb questions” and gave me challenging assignments that boost my thinking and confidence. These people made my master degree feel so rewarding! taken in University of Pennsylvania by @gesyada

Appreciation post for the halal carts brothers, Penn Transit and Bus drivers, lovely security/receptionist ladies, uncles and aunties from faves asian food carts and places in Penn area!

I invited Mr. Young Seol and Mrs. Mi Jeong from Korean Picnic Cupbab food truck for my graduation. As a regular, I speak broken Korean to them whenever I made my order and they seemed to appreciate it, so our conversation was always so fun. One time, I went to the food truck during my hardest winter blues. When I picked up my order, they told me “You seemed a little down today, we gave you a little something to cheer you up”. That snapped me out of my spiral, that I felt seen. I opened the box and found extra gimbap that I really like. I sobbed uncontrollably, realizing that there are a lot of people who care for me here, and I just need to see it. That moment really changed my outlook on how I navigate my life in Philly; that there are still kindness and warmth from people in US, that little gestures and friendly greetings matter to make someone’s day.

There is Kak Watty and Om Martin from Urban Sushi and Kitchen, whom I felt like my own aunt and uncle. They have the best sushi, matcha, and special fried noodle, and how lucky I am they were only 5 mins away by walking. Kak Watty would told me to stay a little longer before I left and surprised me with some Aceh food or special sambal she made for me to take home. They couldnt come to my graduation, but they treated me special dine out to celebrate afterwards. I weeped like a little child during our dinner even though I am 32 years old woman who just finished her master degree, bc I am so touched to receive such care from parental figures here in Philly.

I am glad to make meaningful memories with these wonderful humans, who do beyond what their jobs entail. I am grateful to know their amazing personality, to share banters, laughs, chats and hugs. Shout out to Sajoo for all the extra chicken tenders, Astrid of Penn Bus North, Linda of ICA, Eileen for the warmth, Joy’s uncle and auntie, Weitzmann’s halal food cart uncles who always replied to my “Assalamualaikum”! Terima kasih!

I am so honored to teach Beginning Indonesian courses at University of Pennsylvania and received Penn Prize of Excellence in Teaching by Graduate Students! My student nominated me in secret, so the announcement from @cetli_penn selection committee came as a pleasant surprise. The award reception was on 21 April at @upenn.gradcenter - magically coinciding with Indonesian’s Kartini Day, a national day to commemorate R.A Kartini, a figure who fought for women’s rights and education :)

I am grateful for @atadianpermata and @agneschristie who recommended and helped me to teach this course at Penn Language Center, and to Prof. Nazlı Bhatia who supports and wrote for me to the selection committee, thank you for believing in me ❤️ I want to thank @penncasila.grad @ledianggara @chevptr @nabilasftri @liyarmina @isyalarasati @mianulisakti @andreastevenkartantya for helping the class activities by talking Bahasa Indonesia with students and borrowed me some Rupiah cash for the class exercise and to @yolmita for her legacy ❤️ To Emily Moore from @pennmuseum who helped us access Indonesian artefacts that never been seen for decades in the storage until the class came. From Indonesia, I got the help from ‘collective intelligence’ of experts: @dfordiah @albertrahmanp @tridents_ @susantadwitanaya @_christopherojuu @iam_murda to write the description of those rare Indonesian objects as most of them are not accessible in English or even the internet. I am also grateful for @kintansilvany @sintastorms @gapuraphilly #alfitridede #yulia from Djakarta Cafe-Martabak OK-Good Hatch @w4tty from @urbansushiphilly and the food truck auntie at Penn who makes us feel a sense of Indonesian community here in Philly. And friends @thatbomabrown @salonipmaheshwari @_aliqua__ @nisha.waghmare.6 @takeme__leaveme @jajwalyark for your support ❤️

And, to my wonderful, brilliant and beloved students @hyderhasnohimmat @_nicoledon @3mma_imn1 Naomi, Cherilynn and Zachary! It takes special story and big heart for someone who wants to take a language class to connect with people who are dear to them. You guys make teaching feel so fun, sacred, meaningful and energizing 🥹 Aku sangat bersyukur bertemu kalian! taken in University of Pennsylvania by @gesyada

Next Sunday, March 8th, from 2:30pm–8pm, join @further.reading.press (Bandung, Indonesia) for a zine-making workshop and community dinner at Ulises, co-organized with @gesyada and in collaboration with @gapuraphilly .

This program activates @serv.ingsuggestion , one of Further Reading’s publication series, featured in Ulises: Reassembly—a magazine that reads culture through food, serving up stories and perspectives on how we connect with what we consume.

Part 1 (2.30–4.30pm):
A zine-making workshop with Pemuda Gapura to map stories from our favorite Indonesian food spots in Philly and archive “auntie-approved” recipes adapted with local ingredients.

Part 2 (6–8pm):
A conversation over food and break-fasting (iftar) in the style of liwetan—an Indonesian-style communal feast of rice and shared sides served on long banana leaves. The dinner is opened by a cultural performance by @moderocompany . The meal is prepared and assembled by @pecelndeso.usa and co-hosted by Philadelphia Cultural Treasures Fellow @sintastorms , sharing stories about Indonesian food culture in Philly.

**Capacity is limited. Please only RSVP if you are committed to attending. Links for both programs in our bio.

Plot twist: from studying visual arts 13 years ago, and now trying to make sense statistics and heuristics.. just like the realization after went thru art school that I still have the question “what is art, really?!?”, learning about decision sciences did not make it easier for me to make decision either (especially as gemini lol). Chicken over rice or falafel over rice? Bargain or Supremo? Lololol. I really don’t know how I survive — there were moments I felt deeply challenged to be so far from what I used to know — but in first semester, thankfully I managed to get some laughs, therapy sesh, support and ok moments to behave irrationally 😅 love love love. Some of the p < 0.5 photos hahahaha #iykyk by @gesyada
