This program activates @serv.ingsuggestion , one of Further Reading’s publication series, featured in Ulises: Reassembly—a magazine that reads culture through food, serving up stories and perspectives on how we connect with what we consume.

A conversation over food and break-fasting (iftar) in the style of liwetan—an Indonesian-style communal feast of rice and shared sides served on long banana leaves. The dinner is opened by a cultural performance by @moderocompany . The meal is prepared and assembled by @pecelndeso.usa and co-hosted by Philadelphia Cultural Treasures Fellow @sintastorms , sharing stories about Indonesian food culture in Philly.

TOMORROW! Join us on Zoom for a conversation between Jakarta-based artist Adi Sundoro + Philadelphia-based Indonesian curator Gesyada Siregar. They will be discussing Sundoro’s work, which stems from the discovery that wrappers for the popular street food “gorengan” (Indonesian fried fritters) are commonly repurposed from confidential documents. 👀 (swipe to see some sneak peeks of what they will be discussing)
•
➡️ Wednesday, February 11, 7pm (ET)
➡️ Presented on Zoom (link 🔗 in bio)
➡️ Free and open to the public
➡️ Presented in conjunction with our current exhibition, “Adi Sundoro: Seeking Into The Folds”
•
More about “Seeking Into The Folds”
Sundoro observed that the grease from his freshly fried street food snacks seeped through the paper takeout bags, revealing printed text and images hidden by his snacks. After eating, he unfolded the bags, some of which turned out to be confidential, governmental documents. These sheets of recycled paper held photographs of individuals, names, addresses, birth certificate numbers, signatures, authorizing stamps and more. Sundoro observes a massive data leak at street level, which he describes as an “urban phenomenon,” related to how prints circulate worldwide, including his own.
