Walking into the future through inner and outer landscapes by Julian Ellerby. See @wyrdfutures for work stuff.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
“Your attention is not broken. It’s being corralled — culverted away from everything that sustains life.”

We treat distraction as a personal failing. Julian Ellerby offers something better: attention isn’t just focus, it’s an ecology — shaped by place, memory, and the more-than-human world. Like any living system, it thrives on diversity. Feed it only feeds, and it narrows.

In Vol 3, he shares five rituals for wilding the way we notice — small, deliberate practices for being here again.

“I am an antenna. We all are.”

Volume 3 of @meander_magazine is out. Wildness.

I have two pieces in this issue and I'm genuinely grateful to be here, alongside @bayo.akomolafe @r_u__ta and so many others approaching the these enquiries from completely different ground.

First, a hedgerow in south Oxfordshire, given a voice(s). Stream, ash, badger, lichen, farmer and more. Then, Wilding Attention holds five invitations for meeting the world differently through ritual, at the edges where things get interesting.

Thank you to Tom Greenwood and @vivivigliar for their work putting this issue together.

If imagination builds futures from what has already been lived, then the question is not only where we are going, but what experiences, stories, and timescales we allow to shape our imagination now.

I’ve written a reflection on deep time walking, deep ecology, and how practices that stretch our sense of time can change how we relate to responsibility, care, and the world we are helping to create.

This piece found me on walks and daily wonderings on a high ridge at the southern edge of London.

It’s now live on Substack.

A short reflection on seriousness and play.
On imagination, culture, and the things we often dismiss as not useful enough.

It explores how change is shaped only by policy and evidence, but by story, feeling, and the kinds of practices we allow ourselves to value.

Written as an open inquiry rather than a conclusion.

Wavering 01: Listening for the river beneath the ground.

A short piece about writing as sensing what’s moving beneath routine and certainty.
Letting go of usefulness.
Letting presence lead.

This is the first in a series called Waverings.

This is the beginning of a series called Waverings on my Walking Into the Future Substack.

These pieces emerged from the Headwaters writing course with @r_u__ta and I want to say a proper thank you to her for the care, spaciousness, and rigour she brings to that work. It’s rare and it matters.

These are short pieces written swiftly, as a way of staying with hesitation rather than waiting for clarity.

I’m using waver in its older sense. A wandering river.

More waverings will follow, as and when they need to.

Walking into the Future
I’ve started a Substack as a place for exploratory writing, noticings, fragments, and longer walks with ideas.

A space to think out loud.
To write with landscapes, inner and outer.
To follow attention rather than certainty.

If you’re curious about more-than-human perspectives, futures felt in the body, psychoecology, and creativity as a way of listening, you’re very welcome here.

Feedback, Moral Imaginations and wyrd futures invite you to take part in a process to respond to Defra’s Land Use Framework Consultation with a more-than-human lens.

Using an Interspecies Council—an innovative governance practice created by Moral Imaginations, you will have an opportunity to listen, imagine with and for this land and the species who inhabit it.

What is it?
The Interspecies Council, developed by @moral_imagining, is a governance practice that brings non-human voices into decision-making (read more about it here: https://www.moralimaginations.com/interspecies-council).

Through deep listening and radical imagination, we will co-create a response to this consultation—challenging the separation of humans and nature by ensuring that nature is not just a resource but a recognised participant in governance.

Who is this for?
We are looking for 25 open-hearted participants—land stewards, citizen scientists, farmers, activists, systems thinkers, artists, and community members ready to rethink how decisions are made.

Event Details:
📅 Saturday, 5th April 2025
⏰ 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM
🏡 Paper Garden, Canada Water, London SE16
🍲 A delicious vegan lunch provided
💡 Travel support available

Want to take part?
Register by 23rd March at the link in bio! 🌿
Selected participants will be confirmed by 26th March.

Let’s reimagine governance together. 🦉🌊🌳

🌱What if farms had the tools and insights to grow not just crops, but also flourishing landscapes and communities?

📖 'From Surviving to Thriving: A Pocket Guide to Life-Centred Practices for Farms, Landscapes, and Their Stewards' holds a curated selection of regenerative practices designed to reconnect people, farming, communities, and nature.

🌳 Inspired by the collaborative Roots and Rhythms Project, this work is about transforming our mindset and culture, changing how we interact with ourselves, each other, and the natural world. Our goal is to help grow guardianship of our landscapes and foster thriving ecosystems.

🔍 What's Inside?
The guide is divided into three parts, each offering a range of practices to support your connection with nature, community engagement, and creative exploration:
— Rituals and Routines: Establish daily practices that ground you in nature.
— Convening and Engaging: Build strong, collaborative communities.
— Imagination and Doing: Foster creativity and innovation in your approach.

🚨 The urgency for transformative action has never been greater so please share with or comment at anyone this might resonate with.

📥 Download the PDF for free or purchase a printed copy at the link in bio.

🖍 This guide was a collaborative effort, developed in partnership with the living systems and beings of @lopemede_farm, farmer @eddierixon, ecologist Dr. Emma Gardner @ukceh, communications designer and art director Heather Knight @arteri_studio_, project lead George Simons (Ruleo), and me as design lead (GET LOST).

Our reflections on the Roots & Rhythms project continue with a new article on Substack (link in bio). This time, we dive into the "Exploring" stage—where we mapped the complex web of life at Lopemede Farm, identified potential innovations, and uncovered beacons, blind spots and questions to guide us forward.

Special thanks to Natalie Ganpatsingh @nature_x_nurture_, Miles Richardson @findingnature_, Alayne McDonald, Patrick Andrews @patrickandrews29, James Vaccaro, Alison Rickett, Max Girardeau @thevisionariesuk, Phil Greenwood @sacredearthland, and to @faithinnature_uk, @commonland4returns, @blueearthsummit, @riverford, and @healrewilding for their insights and leadership.

We’re eager to connect with others who share our passion for land, community, and creativity. If our work at Lopemede Farm resonates with you, let’s connect and see how we can support each other's efforts.

With care and wild wishes, on behalf of the Roots & Rhythms team. by @get_lost_julian

Over the coming weeks we will be posting a short series about the Roots & Rhythms project process on Substack. In these posts, we share insights and learnings from each stage of the project, documenting how a life-centred approach reshaped our relationship with land, community, and nature.

In the first post, discover how we began with intentional connection, shared vision, and a commitment to a life-centred approach at Lopemede Farm. Find the link in our bio.

We’re eager to connect and learn from others who share our passion for land, community, and creativity. If our work at Lopemede Farm resonates with you, or if you have experiences or challenges to share then we’d love to hear from you and explore where our paths intersect.
