Back in February, we held an experimental Town Anywhere lab at @islington_climate_centre to explore the emerging more-than-human thread of our work.

We thought long and hard about how to curate the lab in ways that would embed a deeper ecological presence, so that participants could think and design beyond siloed, human-centric logic.

Several activities have emerged from our research and lab session, which we’ve been able to test at a recent Town Anywhere workshop in Swiss Cottage with @thewinchcamden.

Read about this unfolding work on our latest Equinox Substack - link in our Linktree!

The lab was designed by Town Anywhere’s Evaluation & Innovation lead Emma McFarland @emmamcfarland1 , and co facilitated by Emma and Town Anywhere’s Director, @ruthbentovim.

Thank you to lab participatns - @get_lost_julian @wyrdfutures, Ed Jarvis @climatemajorityproject, Justine Huxley @kincentricleadership, @annemarieculhane Shelley Castle @fletefieldlab, Lucy Neal @walkingforest4, Bel Jacobs @empathypr0ject & Rhiannon Keen.

“Your attention is not broken. It’s being corralled — culverted away from everything that sustains life.”

We treat distraction as a personal failing. Julian Ellerby offers something better: attention isn’t just focus, it’s an ecology — shaped by place, memory, and the more-than-human world. Like any living system, it thrives on diversity. Feed it only feeds, and it narrows.

In Vol 3, he shares five rituals for wilding the way we notice — small, deliberate practices for being here again.

“I am an antenna. We all are.”

3 years… how has that happened so quickly?

We started in a small 500 sq ft unit.
Today we are double the size and have also welcomed @contrast_anerley ❤️

What makes this even more special is that we have grown together.
Some of our members have been with us since before we even opened the doors — supporting the idea, trusting the process, and being part of the journey from day one.

We truly wouldn’t be here without you.

First ever event at the @strength_and_mindset_studio - The Badass Games! All raw footage, we will edit into something nicer later, but this was the atmosphere and we hands down said it was the highlight of our career! Bringing people together like this, feeling strong and having fun together, we can’t wait for the next one!

💭 On Saturday, @moral_imagining, @get_lost_labs and @feedback_org came together to host an Interspecies Council with an aim: to craft a more-than-human response to the UK government’s Land Use Framework.

🐿️ Over 30 species gathered in council to share about their dreams and concerns around present and future land use in England, prompted by the release of this draft framework: a national plan that outlines how land should be managed to meet multiple goals at once, such as restoring biodiversity, reaching net zero emissions, producing food, building homes and infrastructure, and supporting public health and wellbeing.

🌿 Why did we do it? Through the Interspecies Council, we wanted to explore the perspectives of other species in relation to land use and nature recovery to shape a collective response to the consultation, and to demonstrate the necessity of more-than-human governance to benefit all of England’s species and ecosystems.

🌳 Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is calling for a response to their framework from its stakeholders… but they are not including the 70,000 species and beings that make up England’s biodiverse community. So far, they have only looked to human perspectives in this call for responses.

🪶 We had a wide range of beings and species present, all chosen by an ecologist to represent a wide range across England: from the Mayfly that only lives one day to the River on which it depends which has been flowing since ancient times. Some domesticated species acknowledged their co-dependence and appreciation for humans, such as the Bramley Apple Tree and Wheatfield, while the Chicken, Pig and Cow wanted to be able to play freely and not be seen as ‘livestock’ or mere resources for human consumption.

📝 The group spent the afternoon working through specific questions related to the Land Use Consultation, which will be collated into a formal response to Defra’s consultation. Over the next few weeks, the team will finalise the response to Defra’s consultation, drawing on the collective intelligence of the more-than-human perspectives that were expressed during the day.

Feedback, Moral Imaginations and wyrd futures invite you to take part in a process to respond to Defra’s Land Use Framework Consultation with a more-than-human lens.

Using an Interspecies Council—an innovative governance practice created by Moral Imaginations, you will have an opportunity to listen, imagine with and for this land and the species who inhabit it.

What is it?
The Interspecies Council, developed by @moral_imagining, is a governance practice that brings non-human voices into decision-making (read more about it here: https://www.moralimaginations.com/interspecies-council).

Through deep listening and radical imagination, we will co-create a response to this consultation—challenging the separation of humans and nature by ensuring that nature is not just a resource but a recognised participant in governance.

Who is this for?
We are looking for 25 open-hearted participants—land stewards, citizen scientists, farmers, activists, systems thinkers, artists, and community members ready to rethink how decisions are made.

Event Details:
📅 Saturday, 5th April 2025
⏰ 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM
🏡 Paper Garden, Canada Water, London SE16
🍲 A delicious vegan lunch provided
💡 Travel support available

Want to take part?
Register by 23rd March at the link in bio! 🌿
Selected participants will be confirmed by 26th March.

Let’s reimagine governance together. 🦉🌊🌳

Great, to be back with the Roots and Rhythms team today to deliver the Interspecies Council, workshop @oxfordrealfarmingconference.

The Council inspired by Joanna Macy's work cultivates empathy for the living beings and systems that share our landscapes, encouraging a more than human perspective to guide future land stewardship.

Deep gratitude for being invited by @realfarmingtrust to their Listening to the Land gathering @42acresretreat.

Strong connections have been made, and much wisdom has been learnt from all of the participants, but especially the teachings by Patrick MacManaway & Brid Walsh.

Great to be part of the Council of All Beings, which was excellently delivered by @get_lost_labs and @george.simons.397 from the Roots & Rhythms team.

@42acresretreat was the perfect spot to host the gathering from the delcious local seasonal food, the stunning wooded landscape, with Sauna and a wild swimming lake where I had a magical moment swimming with beavers one misty morning.

Most importantly, practical practices have been learned to bring back to our land and to share with other farmers for the benefit of all species.

✨New work! ✨

Farmers are under a LOT of pressure to transform their businesses to meet net zero targets, address the biodiversity crisis, and navigate a changing funding landscape, whilst facing declining yields and soil health. 🐝🌾🪱⬇️

Earlier this year, I was part of a small multi-disciplinary team working on 6-month project helping a farmer create a vision and biz model that enables the health of all life (nature including people) to flourish for generations into the future. 🌱🪲

📗We’ve gathered some of the ways of working and being that we used in the project into this pocket guide, to help guide and empower others to reconnect farming, communities and nature.

🎨 It was a dream to play with riso printing again, constraining myself to green + fluoro pink. Printed using non-toxic vegetable-oil inks on 100% recycled paper by Oxford GreenPrint.

🛒 Read or buy the booklet for £10 here (link in bio)👇

We we have a limited number of free copies for farmers/land managers who are interested in diversifying income, fostering local food cultures, nurturing community, and restoring nature. If you know anyone who fits the bill, who would like a copy, drop me a DM!

Wonderful to collaborate with the Roots & Rhythms team of Julian Ellerby @get_lost_labs, George Simons @george.simons.397, Emma Gardner of @ukceh, and farmer Eddie Rixon of @lopemede_farm. And a big thank you to @weareinnovateuk for your funding and support.

Today marked the end of our six month @weareinnovateuk project, Roots & Rhythms. Whilst the project may have ended, it also feels like an exciting new chapter of the farm is unfolding.

A massive thank you to all of those involved and who have contributed towards the project; but deep gratitude to the awesome core team who have been totally inspirational, and delivered an enormous amount of work within a short period. Special mention goes to

@george.simons.397
@get_lost_labs
@heather_knight_
@ukceh

It's been a total privilege to have used the farm as a live laboratory for the project.

We look forward to sharing our findings of the project in due course.
