I have been awarded the Tippett Medal for Composition by the @royalmusicalassociation — vv grateful 😮

It's in recognition of my piece 'As the space functions without me', a half-hour work for spatialised chamber choir, soloists, and surround audio. It sets text by Gaston Bachelard and Lyn Hejinian. I'm really proud of it 🥰

This project took years to bring together and I'm so glad that it's found the home it has. Thanks so much to @alexzethson for his enthusiasm and hard work.

It's ever more important to me to make work that I don't know how I feel about. It's unsettling— flirting with sentimentality and numbness, in both the music (to my ears, at least) and, too, the way of working.

Here is a snippet of @matthewleeknowles For Alan Turing.
Performing the entire 6 hours and 50 minutes was deeply spiritual. I was fully absorbed by the spiralling resonance of the persistent and gently pulsing chords. The true sound of this did not transfer through the live stream recording. Our hope is to create a detailed recording that captures the nuance and spectacular nature of this piece. It will serve a listener who needs to hear the music as though they were sitting next to me whilst I play.

In Tempo 317, we dive into the topic of what do we actually hear when we listen with @zdscomposer, who follows threads of musical metamodernism through @nobuto and @oliver_leith, while @toegrim and @miazabelka consider the place of free improvisation in music history. @seppegebruers explores the relationship between musical creation and listening, questioning the idea of a simple cause-and-effect relationship.
