** New Release: Ed Cooper & Terra Invisus – I no longer want to listen **

To no longer want to listen is distinct from not being able to listen: it is a choice, a marker of agency, an apparent act of autonomy. To no longer want to listen is to withdraw both into and from one’s selves, which entails the cessation of sound, a muteness. To no longer want to listen is to not function, to not want to participate – a discontinuity of resonance.

I no longer want to listen is an EP by composer Ed Cooper, performed by the contemporary music trio Terra Invisus. The project draws on a wide range of genres, including classical, hyperpop, industrial, folk, and ambient. Across six tracks, the bass clarinet, cello, and piano of Terra Invisus intertwine with poetry, detuned guitars, synthesisers, autotune, and field recordings. The album evokes its title: often unsettled and disquieted in character, it weaves together directionless ideas with overly specific yet faltering guidance.

Ed Cooper’s Vestibule, kindly sent to me by the composer. I had to listen to it several times before I could even figure out what exactly I was hearing.

Deep, sometimes barely audible scraping against the inner ear, built around the performers’ heartbeats. A heavy pulse, thick rolling waves, the quiet hooting of a microtonal tuba. At times it feels as if the music has swallowed you whole and is slowly digesting you. Especially in "… as far as… unloving still… down on your stomach…", a 26-minute piece for contrabass flute, two bass clarinets and two double basses.

The three short pieces are transcriptions of fragments from Jeff Buckley songs, themselves digested almost beyond recognition — and then, suddenly, a stab of beauty in "The Suppression".

Performed by Ben Finlay, Jack Adler-McKean and Octandre Ensemble. Released through Thanatosis, May 2026.

Thank you to everyone who has helped Kate and me get our project funded! You did it for us - and for Alan too!

Alan Turing's name is in the title because it is a name that should never be forgotten. By supporting this project, you have helped continue his legacy - not simply as a name in history, but as a truly remarkable human being whose ideas, courage and imagination still speak to us today.

We have no recording of Turing's actual voice, but I once played this piece to Captain Jerry Roberts, a fellow Bletchley Park codebreaker, who told me that in my music he could hear Alan speak.

Thank you!
from Kate and Matthew

You can still donate via the link in my bio and your name will go into a thank you piece which I will make a proper version of when this is all done. Anything we make now goes to our next album :-)))))))))))))))))

"The music is free, peaceful, colourful, humble, resonant, brave, angry, reflective, warm... It needs to be out in the world."
- Kate Ledger

"For Alan Turing is a perfect ode to the brilliant mind and trauma of Turing, which for me extended to a meditation on the suffering of all LGBTQ+ peoples throughout history and the effort to serve something greater than oneself. I hope this piece opens doors to more performances of Matthew Lee Knowles’ long-duration works as evidenced here; they must contain vast compositional imagination and grace."
- James McIlwrath

"...a strikingly beautiful piece ... Matthew had answered many questions about composition that I was asking myself, meaning I had to look for different questions."
- Seán Clancy

"A six hour window onto the eternal present, through which we are invited to contemplate a gentle gathering of piano objects, floating on the surface of time, bobbing and bumping together on that vast ocean which connects our present moment in eternity with the eternal present moment of Alan Turing, whose being and presence far away in the measureless expanse is making the ripples and undulations which have excited these piano objects into sound..."
- Tim Parkinson

"For Alan Turing is a remarkable composition for solo piano by Matthew Lee Knowles, written in 2011 when he was in his mid twenties. Its full duration of nearly 8 hours calls upon the
performer to draw on reserves that are not usually employed. The music is solemn, concentrated and determined; time spent with its materials reveal their innate beauty and the rituals and processes of the music contribute much to it fulfilling its original intention; to stand as a memorial and a tribute to Alan Turing."
- Laurence Crane

"A daring and beautiful project from a composer and pianist who accept no boundaries. For Alan Turing simply is; its melancholic miles of white-note piano code resonate with a strange and alluring mixture of impersonal transparency and tenderness under Kate Ledger's fingers. Finally, Vexations has a B-side. I love it."
- James Weeks

Here is a snippet of @matthewleeknowles For Alan Turing.
Performing the entire 6 hours and 50 minutes was deeply spiritual. I was fully absorbed by the spiralling resonance of the persistent and gently pulsing chords. The true sound of this did not transfer through the live stream recording. Our hope is to create a detailed recording that captures the nuance and spectacular nature of this piece. It will serve a listener who needs to hear the music as though they were sitting next to me whilst I play.
