SNEAKY STOLEN STARTER from a scrap of paper?YEAH BUOY!

In July 2026, @wsu_bread_lab hosted the Grain Gathering. I was lucky enough to attend a wood firing class by @rmiscovich1 (those onions!) and during his presentation, a tub of gorgeous, fragrant starter made its way around the class.

My first thought was to tear the bottom edge off a recipe sheet we were handed, and I smeared a bit of the silky blonde paste onto the scrap of paper and folded it up into my shirt pocket where it remained the rest of the weekend.

When I arrived home from the adventure, I dropped this paper scrap into a jar of water, let it sit for a day, and filtered out the paper fibers with a very fine metal mesh.

I added 50% BF and 50% fresh milled rye from @heartlandcraftgrains , and 24 hours later I have a beautiful, vigorous starter getting used to TN in the wretched summertime.

We recommend pilfering starter every chance you get. It’s a fun way to meet fellow miscreants and the chances of being caught are very low (but never zero). The punishment for being caught is equally low stakes unless you abscond with an entire large tub in which case, flay and flog, but why would you do that. Don’t do that.

@wsu_bread_lab Grain Gathering 2026 was a dream. Today feels like the first day back in the real world after summer camp.

For me, I leave feeling inspired and expanded, the paradox of ones knowledge at once diminished against the close, blinding light of luminaries, and yet becoming better for the experience.

100% silicone DOAP makes quick cleanup of some deliciously sticky sourdough brownie mix!

@oaknegg sent us her super savory chocolate sourdough brownie mix, and it was a happy mail day today when we opened up that care package. Thank you Leigh!

Friends, we are NOT even a tiny bit embarrassed to tell you that we just stuck a whole brownie covered spatula in our mouths right now like a giant spoon. It’s that yummy.

Thank you to ALL our bakers who use and love their DOAPs. The best part of our day is hearing how DOAP is helping you during your bakes.

About a year ago my friend Joshua at @getdoap told me that I needed to try adding rye into my bakes. It was around the same time that I started to venture into blending my flours with more than just white supermarket bread flour. I tried a couple times but never gave it a true, all out try. Fast forward to February, and I started reading about rye and how it is so different in a lot of aspects. It intrigued me so much that I decided to make it the focus of the March bake along challenge.

Experimenting with rye has taught me so much this month. It also has given me a little more clarity over the style of bread that I’m chasing. I’m super into the rustic looking loaves lately. Thank you so much to everyone who baked along with @getdoap and I this month. It has been such a joy to see everyone’s bakes. You guys always keep me motivated and focused long enough to actually get something out of the challenges and I’m so grateful.

The March bake-along challenge is here and it’s going to be a fun one. I’m teaming up with my friend Joshua at @getdoap for the Rye Is DOAP challenge.

TO ENTER:
- Bake anything incorporating rye flour
- Share your bakes with the hashtags #RyeIsDOAP and #CiaoBellaBakeAlong
- Be following @ciaobellabreads and @getdoap

Enter as many times as you would like throughout the entire month of March. At the end of the month one person will be selected to win a $50 DOAP gift card to spend however they would like. Each entry will also be placed into a grand prize drawing at the end of the year for a chance to win a grain mill.

Ice melts in the light.

DOAP stands with the marginalized and vulnerable amongst us, and always will.

Here in Nashville our workshop is buried in ice. Tree limbs burdened to breaking, tasked to carry a weight beyond natures design, destroy much as they fall.

Take heart friends. We will clean up this mess and build again, something better than before. by @getdoap
