Weโ€™re delighted to announce that @carolinebridges is joining the @sported.coaching team.

Caroline has been part of the Sported family since early 2024 and has established herself as one of the UAEโ€™s leading female age-group triathletes. She has consistently led from the front - in training, on our weekly leaderboard and, most importantly, on race day.

Her decision to develop herself as a coach feels like a very natural progression, and weโ€™re incredibly pleased that one of our own has chosen to take that next step with Sported.

Caroline will work alongside David Hunt, Head Coach, as we continue to develop Sported Coaching and give our athletes even more support - from individualised training programmes and group sessions to camps and 1:1 coaching.

Both David and Caroline coach using the @trisutto principles and methodology. Caroline also brings the experience she has gained training at the Xterra coaching base in Suzhou, adding another perspective to the Sported coaching environment.

Whether your goal is your first Sprint, an Olympic distance race, a 70.3 or a full Ironman, weโ€™re here to help you get there.

Welcome to the coaching team, Caroline! ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

โ€œThis is not the race report I expected to write. I had planned to tell the story of a successful day at the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Dali in Yunnan Province. Instead, at 10:38am on Sunday 13 September, my race ended abruptly when a delivery worker tried to cross the bike course and I hit him at around 35 km/h.

I landed hard but felt no immediate pain. The moment I put weight through my left leg, I felt the sickening, sharp pain that could only mean one thing: a fractured hip. The race was over. There would be no finish line, just a few tears and the prospect of three or four months of rehabilitation. And, to complicate matters, we were in provincial China.

The first hospital was, let us say, a little rural in its approach. There were no painkillers and no drip. When I needed to vomit, I was offered a half full waste paper basket. Eventually, IRONMAN arranged a transfer to another government hospital where an English-speaking doctor took charge and I underwent surgery that night.

Monday morning arrived in a haze of exhaustion, stiffness and fever. How are we going to get back to Dubai? Is it time to retire from racing? Not quite my usual โ€˜When is the next race?โ€™ mindset.

Before the crash, there was the adventure of getting around China independently, lost passports, translation app negotiations, a pre-race meal of rice and duck, and race morning conditions that were almost perfect: sunshine, light cloud and very little wind. I was holding a steady 35 km/h and thoroughly enjoying myself.

And then, at 10:38am, someone ran onto the bike course. That single moment changed the race, the trip and the months aheadโ€ฆโ€

@asmithdxb reporting on Challenge Samarkand:

โ€œChallenge has a reputation for hosting races in iconic locations. Samarkand, Uzbekistan is one such location. Logistically itโ€™s not the easiest, but there are worse.

Getting there involved flying to Tashkent then catching a train, with the added difficulty of Uzbekistanโ€™s taxis not having cars that can fit a Bike Box Alan. Thankfully I have local friends and my Dolan bike was transported by a Tashkent triathlon shop.

The event is held at the Silk Road complex which features a man made lake for the swim, surrounded by hotels walking distance from the race village, making race day morning stress free.

I arrived on the Friday before the race, as I walked along the lake to collect my bike I could hear a fast runner behind me, as they passed I realised it was @samlaidlow.

Race day came and I gave Sam a head start he took full advantage of. My choice of goggles was not the best as glare from the sun meant I was unable to sight any buoys until the turnaround point. Despite that I managed a relatively good swim time, for me.

The first half of the bike was quick and overall extremely well organised. Police were at every junction ensuring roads were kept clear. Turns were well signed and flagged. The return leg takes riders through the ancient (3000 years old) part of Samarkand.

Whilst the course had the odd supporter, to my surprise the final turn before entering the ancient city was lined with a mass of people screaming support. The last 20km was rather difficult, not so much the long climbs but the strong head and cross winds made progress slow.

Back at the Silk Road complex the run was four laps around the lake. The temperature had increased, eased by the run through shower at the start of each lap and the head wind for the first few kilometres, but that wind also made the run harder. Aid stations were well stocked and the volunteers provided additional support.

I hoped for a sub 5 hour time but missed that by 12 minutes, ending up ninth in my age group. Despite that slight disappointment, during the awards ceremony I was lucky enough to be one of ten drawn in the lottery for a slot at Roth.โ€

Dali 70.3 didn't end the way it should have. Three months of preparation and all of that legendary Dubai summer heat training came to an abrupt end at 10.38am when a delivery driver fatefully ran across the road and I hit him full on at 35kmh. Result, a fracture to the left hip and some time recovering in China before flying home. Glad to be back in the UAE. Thank you to everybody who has sent good wishes and messages of encouragement #swimbikerun #triathlontraining by @getsportedme
