In The Dark

This creepy space worm is actually called a polychaete worm. This was probably one of the largest I’ve ever seen at around 2ft in length. Floating through the water column it was definitely an eerie sight. I followed it to the sandy bottom where it slowly dug in. Ever searching for its next meal.

Stay tuned for part 2!

I love shooting with my 50mm Macro lens. With this focal length you are able to get a natural 50mm look, all the while being able to get up close and capture those crispy details.

Hello!! 🌊🧂🐙

Since there are some new faces around here, I thought I’d post a picture of the guy behind the camera… me 😅

A little bit about myself and my life. I am a cold water diver from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. If you couldn’t already tell, I’m obsessed with the ocean and capturing the moments I spend with its critters. Some of my best encounters I love sharing here, with you!

I am a gear head and I love new tech. Especially when it comes to underwater photography and videography. Hit me up if you ever want to chat about cameras, gear or underwater lighting.

I currently shoot with a Sony A7IV in an Aquatica housing with a pair of Kraken Hydra 18k video lights. I edit all my own footage and really enjoy the process of colour correction. Mind you, working with light and colour has been my day job for the past 15 years. During the work week, I work in the world of cartoon 3D animation - Lighting and Compositing, to be specific. Which has everything to do with creating dynamic lighting and playing with bold colour.

In my spare time, I create digital paintings, featuring some of favourite ocean animals out here in the Pacific Northwest. I then turn all my designs into stickers, magnets and other merch. All of which you can find at www.gettingsalty.ca or follow the link in my bio.

Thank you all for following along with me and I look forward to creating more photos, videos and artwork to share with you.

As always, Stay Salty!

The March of a Giant

Having the chance to film these massive octopus out in the open, always leaves me awestruck. Rolling their long legs across the sand and gliding their heavy bodies along ocean floor - making it seem almost effortless.

Why travel all the way to dive the top of Vancouver Island?

Because it is one of the best cold water dive locations in the world. Throughout these nutrient rich channels life is in abundance. Cascading walls covered in corals, anemones and sponges. Home to diverse species of rockfish, sculpins, crustaceans and nudibranch - and if you’re lucky wolfeels, octopus and even mola molas!!

If you haven’t had the chance to experience these magical waters yet… Do It!! Book the trip!! It’ll be well worth the money.

Cruising Through the Kelp

Kelp forests are some of my favourite places to dive. They are almost magical in my eyes. Life is everywhere you look. Anemones and juvenile rockfish thrive in these underwater forests. I could spend all day just watching the kelp blades ripple in the currents.

Drifting through the kelp

This was easily the largest moon jellyfish I’ve ever seen. At the size of a beach ball this jelly was drifting through the kelp in the endless search for food.

Meeting an ancient resident of Campbell River

Wolfeels are some of the most misunderstood animals living in our local waters. Their grumpy faces and snaggletooth mouths have people thinking they are dangerous and aggressive. When it’s quite the opposite. They are very timid creatures. Gentle and loving, they are monogamous animals with only one mate in their lifetime. They are also caring parents and trade off guarding their eggs, so the other can hunt.

Moments with a young Giant Pacific Octopus

Catching a GPO outside of its den is a rare experience. But when the timing is right and the stars align, you just might get lucky.

Such a cool moment filming my good friend @branfireun and this beautiful octopus
