In celebration of PRIDE I’m happy to announce the official release of @birdermovie (AppleTV+/Amazon) winner of the Feature Jury prize at Melbourne Queer Film Festival. What an honor to act amongst this courageous cast, vulnerably expressing their energy in this unique thriller of consent gone awry. Thank you director @natedushku and writer @tummyami for your vision and care. (Fun fact: Nate and I grew up in the same corner of Boston, and reconnected on this movie for the first time since elementary school). The Lunchbox feature in @sfchronicle : Rachel Chavkin and the Lazours transform a quiet film romance into a wistful, emotionally delicate new musical about loneliness and fate, theater critic Lily Janiak writes. Every workday in Mumbai, 200,000 hot lunches get delivered from home and commercial kitchens via a single network of workers called dabbawalas. Low-tech and efficient, the 136-year-old system is famous for never making mistakes. Well, almost never. Ritesh Batra’s 2013 film “The Lunchbox” envisioned one such slip: A young housewife hopes to rekindle her husband’s interest with a special meal, complete with a fragrant spice recommended by an auntie upstairs and arranged in a set of cylindrical stackable tins called a tiffin. Somehow, it gets mis-tagged, mis-sorted or just sent on the wrong train and bicycle journey to a widower on the verge of retirement.  But as the film’s musical adaptation gears up for its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Batra and the rest of the show’s creative team reframed the dabbawalas’ supposed error. “It wasn’t a mistake,” choreographer Reshma Gajjar told the Chronicle during a group interview over — what else? — lunch. “It was divine intervention.” But it’s not just a miracle, Batra added. It’s that the characters are primed to have a miracle happen to them. “They are ready for either consigning themselves to the usual flames of their life, or ready for something different,” he said. “The story puts them in the position of choosing between those two things.” The show, which begins previews Sunday, May 17, brings together Tony Award-winning director Rachel Chavkin (“Hadestown”), the Lazours — songwriting brothers Patrick and Daniel Lazour — along with Batra and Gajjar (who’s performed in “La La Land” and with Madonna).
