Five years. That’s how long I’ve had the idea for this painting floating around in my head. 🌊

I’ve always imagined how beautiful it could be to capture the texture and movement of water crashing against the rugged Newfoundland coastline. I wanted to really push myself with this piece, experimenting with layers, movement, and all those tiny details that make water feel so alive.

And it definitely challenged me! There were moments when I wasn’t quite sure how it would all come together, but after many, many hours of painting, I’m so happy I stuck with it. Sometimes you just have to trust the process.

I also incorporated around 100 tiny beads throughout the painting, adding another layer of texture that catches the light as you move around it. It’s one of those pieces I really hope people will take the time to get up close to and explore.

It only felt right to pair this reel with a little Alan Doyle, a Newfie musician whose music I grew up listening to 💙

So many of you have been following along with this piece in my stories, and I’m really excited to finally share the finished painting with you!

Come see it in person at Rooted, opening tomorrow, October 16, from 6–9 PM at Gibson Fine Art!

What makes a place feel like home?

Join us for the opening of ROOTED, a new solo exhibition by McKenna Prather inspired by the landscapes, traditions and memories connecting Alberta and Newfoundland.

Moving between mountain trails, prairie skies, rugged coastlines, family cabins and weathered buildings, Prather turns familiar places and quiet moments into richly layered paintings. Quilt-inspired patterns and stitched details appear throughout the collection, reflecting the handmade traditions, family histories and memories that shape our sense of belonging.

ROOTED is ultimately less about geography than connection: the places we return to, the traditions we carry with us and the landscapes that become part of who we are.

A little piece of home, in postcard form. 💌

Something fun I’ve been working on for Rooted… a collection of 20 miniature, hand-painted originals inspired by Alberta and Newfoundland!

From colourful saltbox houses and prairie skies to curious creatures and familiar landscapes, each little postcard is a celebration of the places, colours, and everyday details that make these provinces so special.

I wanted these to feel a little nostalgic, a little whimsical, and like tiny keepsakes you might stumble upon in an old-fashioned souvenir shop. Each one is completely unique, right down to its playful painted border!

All 20 will be available at Rooted at Gibson Fine Art. I can’t wait for you to pick out your favourite! 🐟🌾💙
