Giga is a UNICEF-ITU initiative to connect every school to the internet and every young person to information, opportunity, and choice.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Right now at the Université de Genève, a fascinating conversation is unfolding about photography, truth, and trust in the age of generative AI.

As AI-generated images become increasingly convincing, emotional, and indistinguishable from reality, one question feels more urgent than ever: Can we still trust what we see?

Featuring @hannahreyesmorales , Pulitzer Prize finalist and National Geographic Explorer, and @clement_lambelet, Head of Master Photography at ECAL, moderated by @a__ewyrsch , Photo Editor at Le Temps.

An important conversation at a moment when the boundaries between documenting reality and generating it are rapidly disappearing.

Uzbekistan is expanding school connectivity nationwide, creating new opportunities for learning and innovation and strengthening the foundations for an AI-ready education system.

In 2021, the Government of Uzbekistan shared national school connectivity data with Giga, laying the groundwork for collaboration on improving connectivity data and real-time monitoring.

Today, GigaMeter provides real-time data on internet connectivity from more than 10,000 schools, giving decision-makers greater visibility into internet performance and supporting more informed planning and investment.

#GCF2026 is underway, and the stakes could not be higher!

As digital transformation accelerates, disconnected schools and learners risk falling further behind.

Opening the two-day Giga Connectivity Forum, @ituofficial Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas highlighted key trends with an impact on school connectivity: growth in the space industry, rapid advances in AI, maximizing digital skills to solve real problems and the focus on digital investment and sustainable financing.

Delegates from governments, regulatory authorities, universal service institutions, and regional and international organizations are now taking stock of progress since 2025 and identifying practical actions on planning connectivity, financing, enabling environments, contracting and capacity building.

🌍 Two days. A global challenge. One urgent mission: connect every school.

Stay tuned for daily highlights from #GCF2026!

Connecting the places children depend on.

From classrooms to health facilities, affordable, reliable internet can help essential services reach more children and families—and support the people delivering them.

In part two of our series from The Gambia, discover how the Government and UNICEF’s Digital Inclusion team are working together to make connectivity more affordable and sustainable.

This is why digital impact matters: helping strengthen the services that support children’s learning, health and futures.

Watch to see the work behind those connections.

The winning photographs of the Giga Photo Award 2026 are on view at Uni Mail / University of Geneva from 5 – 16 October 2026.
Selected from 4,747 submissions on the theme „The Urgency of Connectivity“, the images span nine countries across four continents.

Across these stories, connectivity appears not as technology but as lived experience: a means of caring, communicating, and remaining present in the world.

In the context of the exhibition, Giga organises a talk around AI, Truth and Images:
As generative AI makes it easier than ever to create convincing images, how do we distinguish between what is real, synthetic, or emotionally persuasive?

With @clement_lambelet , Head of Master Photography at ECAL and
@hannahreyesmorales , Pulitzer Prize finalist and National Geographic Explorer.

Through presentations, discussion, and an interactive audience exercise, the event will explore how images are made, interpreted, and trusted in a rapidly changing media landscape.
Language: English

The event is presented by the Giga Photo Award in collaboration with the Geneva Research Lab for Digital Impact, the Geneva School of Economics and Management, and the University of Geneva.

AI, Truth and Images

Generative AI can now produce images that are convincing, emotional, and entirely synthetic. So how do we tell what's real, what's generated, and what's simply designed to move us?

Join us at @unigeneve for an evening on photography, truth, and trust at a time when AI reshapes what we see, with:
• @hannahreyesmorales , Pulitzer finalist and @natgeo Explorer
• @clement_lambelet , Head of Master Photography at @ecal_ch University of Art and Design Lausanne and co-founder of Soft Photography

Moderated by @a__ewyrsch , Photo Editor at @letemps.ch

Through presentations, discussion, and an interactive audience exercise, we'll look at how images shape what we believe, and what authenticity means when a photograph is no longer proof.

🥂 The conversation continues over a networking apéro.

Come early or stay late: the Giga Photo Award exhibition will be on display at UNIGE as part of @swissphotomonth from 5-16 October 2026.

Presented by the Giga Photo Award with the Geneva Research Lab for Digital Impact and the Geneva School of Economics and Management (GSEM).

📅 Thursday, 15 October, 18:00
📍 Uni Mail, Bd du Pont-d'Arve 40, Geneva

🌐 Expanding school connectivity is not only a technical challenge, it is a governance and ecosystem coordination endeavour that underpins the digital transformation of education systems.

🎓 The recent Giga Learning Hub training, delivered via ITU Academy, dived
into the topic of Digital Governance for School Connectivity, with participants working through core building blocks — from governance frameworks to multi-actor coordination, financing, and change management —enabling them to act as "agents of change."

💡 For many, the biggest shift was in mindset. As one delegate put it, the training helps clarify "who owns what, who should implement what, and who should be responsible for what" — breaking down the silos that have long fragmented education systems.

🔑 Another reflected that school connectivity "is not only about just mapping schools — it's about governance, financing, and collaboration working together."

This International Youth Day, we recognize that while young people's lives are shaped by different national and local realities, their aspirations are remarkably similar — the chance to learn, create, participate, and build a better future for themselves and their communities. ✨

What's needed? Skills. Tools. Connectivity. Opportunity. 🤝

In a new blog, Giga's Adeleh Mojtahed shares her firsthand reflections from the field 📝 — drawing on her work leading the rollout of the AI and Robotics Youth Training Programme across its pilot countries, working closely with governments to bring it to schools and communities.

From Training of Trainers workshops to cheering on young innovators at the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge, she reflects on the remarkable talent she encountered — and what can happen when governments, teachers and partners come together. 🚀

A connected classroom can become a launchpad for the next generation of AI talent. But it starts with connectivity — a classroom can't become an AI-ready learning space until it's online. That's where Giga's work supporting governments to connect schools comes in. 🌐

Connect schools. Open doors. Give young people the space to build the future they already have the talent to imagine.

Happy International Youth Day! 💙

That's a wrap on the Giga Photo Award 2026!

On 10 June, we welcomed nine young photographers from around the world to Geneva for an evening celebrating photography, storytelling, and the mission to connect every school to the internet.

More than a month later, these stories continue to resonate. As the exhibition enters its final week in Geneva, it will travel next to the University of Geneva this October.

A special thank you to our speakers:
🎤 Marc-Olivier Wahler (MAH)
🎤 Tomas Lamanauskas (ITU)
🎤 Christopher Fabian (UNICEF | Giga)
🎤 Joëlle Bertossa (City of Geneva)

At a time when too many children are still offline, these images remind us that connectivity is essential for learning, opportunity, and inclusion.

And above all, thank you to the photographers whose work helps bring this reality into focus.

Next stop: University of Geneva, 5–16 October 2026.
