Giga is a UNICEF-ITU initiative to connect every school to the internet and every young person to information, opportunity, and choice.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I was honoured to participate in the @giga_global Giga Connectivity Forum 2026, a joint initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) @ituofficial and UNICEF, held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 8–9 October 2026.

The Forum brought together senior executives and key decision-makers from Ministries of Education, Ministries responsible for ICT and Communications, and Communications Regulatory Authorities from countries participating in Giga. It provided a valuable platform for dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration towards accelerating meaningful, inclusive, and sustainable internet connectivity for schools.

I am deeply grateful to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis; the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu; the Ministry of Education GH, and Diana Owusu-Ansah of the National Communications Authority Ghana for the opportunity to participate in this important global engagement.

The Forum offered an invaluable opportunity to engage with fellow policymakers, technical experts, and development partners, exchange experiences, and explore practical strategies for translating our collective commitments into measurable and sustainable outcomes for schools and learners.

As Ghana advances its school connectivity agenda towards Giga's 2030 vision, strengthening partnerships, mobilising sustainable investments, and building national capacity will be critical to ensuring that every school has access to reliable and meaningful internet connectivity. This is essential to expanding digital learning opportunities and advancing equitable, quality education for all learners.

Uzbekistan is expanding school connectivity nationwide, creating new opportunities for learning and innovation and strengthening the foundations for an AI-ready education system.

In 2021, the Government of Uzbekistan shared national school connectivity data with Giga, laying the groundwork for collaboration on improving connectivity data and real-time monitoring.

Today, GigaMeter provides real-time data on internet connectivity from more than 10,000 schools, giving decision-makers greater visibility into internet performance and supporting more informed planning and investment.

🌍 International Day of the Girl Child. Around the world, the majority of people offline are girls, cut off from the tools they need to connect and build their futures.

Revisiting our animated film “Close The Gap,” made in partnership with @giga_global (the @unicef and @ituofficial initiative), and illustrated by the incredible Cécile Cuny. It tells the story of what happens when girls are given access to the internet and everything that opens up when they are.

Connecting the places children depend on.

From classrooms to health facilities, affordable, reliable internet can help essential services reach more children and families—and support the people delivering them.

In part two of our series from The Gambia, discover how the Government and UNICEF’s Digital Inclusion team are working together to make connectivity more affordable and sustainable.

This is why digital impact matters: helping strengthen the services that support children’s learning, health and futures.

Watch to see the work behind those connections.

The winning photographs of the Giga Photo Award 2026 are on view at Uni Mail / University of Geneva from 5 – 16 October 2026.
Selected from 4,747 submissions on the theme „The Urgency of Connectivity“, the images span nine countries across four continents.

Across these stories, connectivity appears not as technology but as lived experience: a means of caring, communicating, and remaining present in the world.

In the context of the exhibition, Giga organises a talk around AI, Truth and Images:
As generative AI makes it easier than ever to create convincing images, how do we distinguish between what is real, synthetic, or emotionally persuasive?

With @clement_lambelet , Head of Master Photography at ECAL and
@hannahreyesmorales , Pulitzer Prize finalist and National Geographic Explorer.

Through presentations, discussion, and an interactive audience exercise, the event will explore how images are made, interpreted, and trusted in a rapidly changing media landscape.
Language: English

The event is presented by the Giga Photo Award in collaboration with the Geneva Research Lab for Digital Impact, the Geneva School of Economics and Management, and the University of Geneva.

We didn’t get here alone 🫂. On #InternationalCharityDay, we’re pausing to name the people behind Evoca Foundation’s work because our impact is never a solo effort. Thank you for everything - The Evoca Foundation Team.

@hichrisfabian is joining Devcon 8!

Co-founder of @giga_global , a UNICEF-ITU initiative, Christopher has pushed blockchain as public-goods infrastructure, from launching UNICEF’s CryptoFund to using NFTs for fundraising.

Christopher frames connectivity and compute as fundamental rights, and Giga’s mission to connect every school on the planet to the internet is a model of public-interest coordination at planetary scale.

Great to have you back at Devcon, Christopher! 🌍

15-year-old Rajsi from India has won first place in the Junior Visual Storyteller category at the Giga Photo Award 2026. Rajsi’s capture, of a child studying at home with the help of a mobile phone, reflects the promise of possibility that digital connectivity holds for vulnerable communities.

Between the Lines — a storytelling format where the photo isn’t just posted but unfolded, offering brief context or small details that open the scene a little further. A place to share insight into a moment, a story, a place, a person — and everything held quietly inside the frame. // Let me know what you think 🤔☺️ // #betweenthelines #southsudan #storytelling #unmiss #yei

Digital Postcards from Yei

The images show UNMISS peacekeepers at the Yei Airstrip in South Sudan, a convoy of white armored vehicles positioned as they wait for a delegation’s arrival. While one Nepali peacekeeper takes a selfie from the armored vehicle, others nearby lift their phones to photograph the moment. These small gestures form digital postcards sent from a remote mission site, bridging the distance between deployment and home.

A galaxy does not explain itself. Neither does a body in motion. Dr. Satya Gontcho A Gontcho spends her life reading both, and last week she asked us to wonder if we ever needed to choose between them.

A big thank you to Dr. @sgontcho, cosmologist and Odissi dancer, and to @hichrisfabian of @giga_global, for a conversation on beauty as evidence and the patterns we risk losing to a machine that sees faster than we do.
