Even the gentle giants get trapped.

4 years ago, together with 4 divers, I helped rescue a 14m humpback whale entangled in a derelict drift net off the coast of Cala Millor, Mallorca.

This was alarming in many ways, especially because:
🐋 Humpback whales are not regular visitors in the Mediterranean.
🎣 Drift nets have been banned in the EU for over 30 years.

Yet ghost nets still drift through our sea, silently trapping marine life long after being abandoned.

Seeing her struggle to swim — covered in parasites and severely underweight — was a reminder of how fragile marine life truly is.

The Mediterranean is beautiful.
But it is also fragile.

Thanks @palma_aquarium_fundacion for the guidance during the rescue and @pedrosub_soncifrevell for capturing this moment 🫶

The true essence of the Mediterranean? Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass found nowhere else on Earth. 🌱

During a recent dive in Mallorca, we found a ghost net tangled with Posidonia, likely ripped from the seabed.

This seagrass:
🌊 keeps the Balearic waters crystal clear
🐠 provides a nursery for marine life
🌱 produces more oxygen than rainforests

But above all, it is one of our greatest allies against climate change, capturing and storing huge amounts of blue carbon.

Yet ghost nets and marine debris continue to destroy ecosystems that took centuries to grow.

The Mediterranean is beautiful.
But it is also fragile.

And protecting it can start with something as simple as removing what does not belong there.💙

9 months and counting. ⏳
The boat that washed up on our shore in mid-January is still here.

She was bought over a month ago and was supposed to be removed by now... yet she’s still here.

Every day she stays, the sea breaks her down a little more. 🌊

Will she ever be removed?
Will the owners take responsibility?

Seagrass bleaches too, and almost nobody talks about it 🌿

Warm waters are turning our Posidonia leaves transparent, for the second year in a row in our bay. What does that mean for one of the Mediterranean’s most important ecosystems?

That’s where science, and every diver who reports what they see, makes a difference 🫶

We are all part of protecting our ocean, and every observation is part of the solution💙

Protecting the Mediterranean doesn’t look like one big thing. 🌊

It’s a mix of many actions, a daily choice, and often the small choices are the ones that make the biggest difference. Like choosing eco-conscious fashion that gives materials a second life.

I teamed up with @oceanideseyewear e because their sunnies are made from recycled materials, and that matters to me.

If you’d like a pair, you can use my code GIGI10 for 10% off. ☀️

What’s your small choice for the Med? 👇

Mediterranean lifestyle: there’s more to it than you think 💙

Yes, the white sandy beaches, the food, and the turquoise waters. But what really fascinates me is how important this sea is.

It’s just 1% of the ocean’s surface, and yet it’s our treasure. Seagrass meadows, marine life, millions of people who depend on it.
Most of us don’t realise what we have right in front of us 🫶

So next time you jump in, remember: you’re swimming in something special.
And it’s worth protecting 💙

What does the Med mean to you?🐙

Do you want to help monitor coral reefs? 🪸

On September 26, we’ll dive into action, and every observation counts.

As an Observatorio Centinela of Observadores del Mar, this September we’re joining their “Coral Monitoring Program”.

We collect and submit data that contributes to real marine research. That data helps scientists understand how our oceans are changing.

This is underwater citizen science.

Dive with purpose.
Protect the blue 💙

🌊 The Mediterranean just broke sea surface temperature records and it’s not only bad news for marine life.

Warmer seas = more fuel for storms. Here’s the science behind Medicanes (yes, the Med’s own version of a hurricane) 🌪️

Because it is not “just hot” it is also a sign of change.

Every day, 730 tonnes of plastic enter the Mediterranean 😢

Every time I dive, I come back up with a mesh bag full of marine debris.

The good news is some brands are giving abandoned marine waste a second life. Instead of letting plastic drift for decades, they’re collecting it, cleaning it, and turning it into something you can actually wear 💙

And here’s another: we all have the power to choose, and choosing well matters. My sunglasses are by @oceanideseyewear , made from recycled plastic 🫶

Small swaps, big changes.
