Earlier this year at my charity event with Iolo Williams, we were raising as much money as we could for an awesome rewilding project here in Wales, Tir Natur
As part of the auction Gigrin Farm (The Red Kite Centre) kindly donated the use of their prime photography hide for me to host a group, who bid in the auction for their places.
So we arranged it for today, hoping to have some beautiful sunshine and autumn colours as the backdrop. It wasn’t quite as sunny as hoped for, but still some nice light and awesome Kite action for them to photograph.
My sincere thanks to Dominique at the farm, and to the group who very kindly donated to the charity to join me today.

White Kite at Gigrin 🦅
Capturing this specific species might not be a first for everyone, but for me, being completely unfamiliar with the White Kite, actually seeing and photographing one was an incredible experience.
Wildlife photography is full of moments like this, discovering species you’ve never encountered before, learning as you go, and simply being lucky enough to witness them in their natural environment. 📸

Wow wow wow! Saturday was undoubtedly the most red kites we’ve ever had at Gigrin! Maybe 500-600! Incredible!

If you fancy coming along to one of our photography workshops you’ve only got October and November…but don’t worry, we’ll be back in March!!

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

Following a trip up to North Wales with @becaseren, I was keen to stop by Gigrin Farm - the Red Kite Feeding Station - on the way home. This incredible site has played a key role in the conservation success story of red kites so I was keen to visit!

Once persecuted to near extinction in the UK, the red kite species has recovered dramatically through legal protection, habitat management and reintroduction programmes across England and Wales since 1989.

Since a pair of red kites were found breeding on the site, Gigrin Farm was established as an official feeding station by the RSPB since 1992. In that time, red kite numbers visiting the farm have increased from just 2 birds to now over 600 of them - including a few rare leucistic red kites with pale of white plumage caused by a genetic mutation.

Having grown up in Buckinghamshire where a strong red kite population has existed for a lot of my childhood, it was great to see the birds close up from the hide and in such huge numbers!

Red kite, age 12 ❤️🪶
‘I finally started to paint my favourite bird ever, and I can’t wait to show you!’
.
I had such an incredible time watching red kites at Gigrin Farm, they have done so much good for the rehabilitation of these incredible birds. I saw them on Springwatch a few years ago and I’ve been hoping to visit ever since, I was so happy we got the chance to visit when we were in Wales!
.
They’ve been feeding them here since the 1990s and now there’s 1000s of them, it’s incredible! ❤️🪶
.
I can’t belive I’ve just seen hundreds of red kites! It’s absolutely amazing! They’re my favourite bird, so it was just so incredible to see them all like swopping down!
.
There was a buzzard flying around, so it was just incredible to see how much bigger they are than buzzards. It’s just been one of the most amazing days ever, it’s absolutely incredible!’
.
It’s a day I’ll remember for the rest of my life!
.
Red kites have had one of the most successful reintroduction programmes in the UK! ❤️
.
They used to be heavily persecuted 💔
.
By 1900 they were almost extinct in the UK 🙏💔
.
With just a few pairs left in Wales 💔
.
But since the 1990s the population has increased by 2464% 😃❤️🪶

The story of the red kites gives me hope that we can protect wildlife if we really try!’ 🙏🥹❤️
