Wet and windy but worth persevering!

Red Kite in Mono and Colour. Very rarely do I photograph wildlife let alone post something on Instagram. I don’t have the field craft or the patience.
However I’ll make an exception in sharing this image of the majestic Red Kite which is now often seen in certain parts of the UK. This image was captured at Gigrin Farm near Rhyader in Mid Wales last year. This feeding station attracts hundreds of these beautiful birds every day so it isn’t difficult to get a good shot. The main problem is one of separation- there are just so many kites there is rarely just one in the frame, particularly given their speed of flight as they descend on the meat which is put out for them. An extraordinary spectacle.

A special afternoon of bird photography at the Red Kite Centre in mid-Wales. Although I regularly see a lot of red kites in my Oxfordshire area it’s a whole different experience to see hundreds of them at the same time at Gigrin Farm.

This is one of natures special birds, a “white” kite. Leucism is a condition that results in partial loss of pigmentation in an animal that causes white, pale, or patchy colouration of the skin, hair, feathers, scales but not the eyes. There are a handful of these white kites in the wild and I was so lucky to see this one.

The last shots show a regular red kite with an admittedly out of focus white kite further back but you can see the comparison of tones rather well.

• Leucistic Red Kite •

There are thought to be around 10 Leucistic Red Kites in the whole world, so it was an absolute delight that one was at @gigrinfarm when I visited this weekend. Not only that, but it stayed around for several hours.

A beautiful looking raptor for sure.
