Friday Flashback: Five years ago today, my first meeting with Anna Wintour! I was in Melbourne, together with Dr Georgia Lee, who was the first Singaporean selected to be in the Vogue100. ⁣
⁣
We had been invited to attend two wonderful events where Anna was honoured, as well as to watch the Women’s Semi-Finals of the Australian Open as her guest. It was also such an delight to meet Anna’s friends, including Baz Luhrmann, the Academy Award-winning director of movies such as Moulin Rouge, and to see Nicole Kidman and her husband, Keith Urban in person at the Australian Open.⁣
⁣
Georgia is the epitome of impeccable personal style and a fashion icon of her own and I couldn’t think of anyone else who was better suited to represent Singapore to Vogue than her!⁣

What a lovely surprise to be named one of the evening’s Best Dressed at the 2026 Eye Ball Gala last night!

The theme, “Safari Extravaganza”, was a bit of a challenge for me, especially since I don’t own anything remotely tan or beige. Thankfully, inspiration struck at the eleventh hour. I draped a piece of leopard-print fabric across myself like a sash and wore it over a gold sequinned tuxedo jacket whose abstract pattern rather conveniently resembled jungle vines.

The finished look had more than a touch of Eddie Murphy’s African prince in Coming to America, which quite a few people spotted and mentioned during the evening!

But behind its wonderfully witty and whimsical name, The Eye Ball does some very serious good. The gala supports the work of the Singapore National Eye Centre and Singapore Eye Research Institute through VisionSave, helping to fund patient care, eye research and innovation, education and training, and community outreach.

I also have a very personal connection with The Eye Ball that goes back to its early years. When I was at Singapore Tatler, my friend Dr Ho Ching Lin from SNEC approached me to help with the fledgling gala. I still remember our discussions around that wonderfully cheeky name, “The Eye Ball”, and, if memory serves me correctly, we may well have come up with it together.

More than a decade later, it is enormously gratifying to see how the gala has grown in strength, stature and reach, and especially nice to see Tatler Singapore continuing its association with the event.

My warmest thanks to my hosts, Shabnam Arashan and Raj Kumaresan, for the invitation, and congratulations to Ching Lin and everyone involved in putting together such a successful, meaningful and thoroughly enjoyable evening! by @gilbertcheah

A fabulous afternoon with the equally fabulous Wilnelia Merced, Lady Forsyth, Miss World 1975. We met at the recently-held Miss World contest in Vietnam, where she was a judge, and I was delighted to show her around town during her Singapore visit.

And of course, no proper introduction to Singapore would be complete without introducing her to one of my greatest culinary loves: Peranakan food!

So off we went to Violet Oon for afternoon tea, where we inhaled a triple tray full of savoury and sweet treats. The afternoon became even lovelier when dear Violet herself joined us for a while.

A British-Peranakan afternoon tea in Singapore, with the first Puerto Rican woman to win Miss World--a perfect example of how the Miss World Festival connects people together across countries and cultures! 💙
And a very special thank-you to Violet Oon for so graciously hosting us at your beautiful Ion venue! ----

Attending the Miss World finals in person has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. As a child, I would eagerly watch the brief black-and-white news clips of the competition, back in the days when the finals were regularly held at London’s Royal Albert Hall. I was so fascinated by Miss World that I even wrote to the Straits Times to petition for the show to be televised in Singapore, but sadly to no avail!

Each year, when the finals took place, I would actually call the newspaper office to ask who had won. This was, of course, long before the internet, social media and instant news, when finding out what had happened on the other side of the world could take some effort.

So to finally be there in person all these years later, watching the Miss World 2026 finals unfold before me, was incredibly special. And then to attend the official after-party, meet the newly crowned Miss World 2026, and meet so many former Miss World winners as well made it feel like several childhood dreams coming true at once.

My deepest thanks to my friend Sean Christopher Wong, National Director for Miss World Singapore and Miss World Malaysia, for helping me secure a ticket and for so kindly inviting me to the official after-party. You helped make a very old dream a reality!

And a huge congratulations to the Vietnamese national directors and organisers for staging such a spectacular production and for hosting everyone with such warmth and graciousness. This has been an unforgettable experience, and one I will treasure for a very long time! 👸🏻💙

Happy 70th birthday to my dear friend Dick Lee! ❤️

It’s hard to know where to begin summarising my friendship with someone who's been part of my life for more than 40 years and, without perhaps even realising it at the time, changed its course completely.

I first met Dick in 1984. I was living in Boston and back in Singapore on holiday, freelancing for Go Magazine. My editor sent me to interview this already-famous local singer-songwriter called Dick Lee. I did the interview, we went our separate ways, and neither of us could possibly have imagined where that first meeting would eventually lead.

Dick and I became much closer in the late ’90s, during my visits back to Singapore from NYC and Dick’s trips there. Then, in December 2000, while I was back in Singapore, Dick told me he had returned from HK, where he had been VP at Sony Music, to become Creative Director of the new SPH MediaWorks.

And then came the offer that changed my life: he wanted me to move back to Singapore and join him at this new station.

Thanks to Dick, I was offered the job of launching and running the station’s television guide magazine and overseeing it's branding and promotions. So in January 2001, after some 20 years in the US, I packed up my life in New York, gave up my American permanent residency and moved back to Singapore.

Looking back now, I realise just how pivotal that moment was. Had Dick not brought me home, I might never have returned to Singapore when I did. I would not have gone on to the career I subsequently had here, including my wonderful years as Managing Director of Tatler Singapore. One invitation from this friend changed the trajectory of my life.

Dick, thank you for your friendship, your generosity, your faith in me all those years ago, your continuous encouragement, and for opening a door that changed my life. I will always be grateful for that and everything else.

Happy 70th birthday wishes, with much respect, gratitude and love. Here’s to the next wonderful chapters ahead. ❤️🥂

I’m in the a Philippines now on what is turning out to be one of the most meaningful and heartwarming trips of my life: my first volunteer trip with the amazing @soles4souls.

Soles4Souls is a global non-profit organisation that distrbutes shoes and clothing to people in need. What I love about their work is that it goes far beyond simply giving things away. They provide new shoes and clothing to people facing hardship and crisis, help children get the proper footwear they need for school and everyday life, and use donated shoes and clothing to support small entrepreneurs in developing communities, helping them build businesses and earn sustainable incomes. At the same time, they give millions of usable items a second life instead of allowing them to end up as waste.

Today, that mission became very real for me.

We travelled to Tupsan Elementary School on the small and beautiful island of Camiguin, off the coast of Mindanao in the Philippines. There, about 20 of us volunteers spent the day handing out new shoes, school supplies, toys and other treats to more than 370 children.

It was incredibly moving to see the excitement on their faces. Many of these children come from families with very limited means, where something as basic as replacing a pair of shoes as a child grows can be a real financial burden. Some of the children arrived wearing shoes that were clearly too small and tight for their growing feet. Watching them try on a brand-new pair that actually fitted, and seeing their faces light up, was incredibly touching and special.

I’m so grateful to be here and to have the opportunity to help these children directly, even in this small way. There’s something very different about actually being on the ground, meeting the children, fitting shoes onto their feet and seeing firsthand where the help goes.

A huge thank you to my dear friend Nana Au-Chua @iamnanaauchua for introducing me to this wonderful organisation, and to the fantastic Soles4Souls team for bringing us here and organising such a meaningful experience.

I think I’ll be returning home from this trip with much more than I came with. ❤️ taken in Camiguin Island by @gilbertcheah

I was honoured to be a judge at the Diamond Exchange of Singapore's Jewellery Design Competition 2025 and delighted to finally see the finished piece after a year of production! It was unveiled this week at the Singapore International Jewellery Expo (SIJE) at Marina Bay Sands.

The competition was entitled “SG60 – Celebrating the facets of Singapore” and commemorated Singapore's 60th anniversary of independence and its longstanding cultural and economic ties to Italy.

We judges had a very tough but enjoyable time going through the almost 200 entries from around the world! Designs had to reflect aspects of Singapore's multiculturalism, modernity, growth, tradition, national pride, and the strong Singapore-Italy relationship.

The winning design is this necklace named United In Bloom, by Claudia Civitarese from Rome. In her design statement she said that the piece draws inspiration from Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, and is seamlessly fused with the architectural majesty of Rome’s Pantheon. "Though distant in geography, these two symbols embody shared values: history, excellence, openness, and sustainability."

Necklace in 18K Gold and Carbon coating
Natural Rubies: 14.75ct
Diamonds: 3.56ct
Weight: 14.10gm

Today, 1 July, would have been the 65th birthday of Diana, Princess of Wales, if she'd lived. In tribute to one of the greatest fashion icons of the modern age, here are my favourites of her many amazing, trendsetting outfits. 🤍

1: Designed by Christina Stambolian. Famously known as the "Revenge Dress," this off-the-shoulder black silk dress was worn to the Serpentine Gallery in June 1994, on the same evening Prince Charles's tell-all television interview aired.

2. Designed by Bruce Oldfield. A shimmering, metallic silver pleated lamé gown with a low back and strong shoulders, worn to the London premiere of the James Bond film A View to a Kill in July 1985.

3. Designed by Jacques Azagury. This striking red off-the-shoulder gown with an attached floor-length cape was worn by Diana on her 36th birthday to the Tate Gallery in July 1997.

4. Designed by Catherine Walker. An asymmetric, one-shouldered turquoise silk satin gown that she memorably paired with a Queen Mary emerald choker worn as a headband during a tour of Australia in 1985.

5. Designed by Bellville Sassoon. Diana wore this romantic, off-the-shoulder fairy-tale gown to the Victoria and Albert Museum in November 1981, where she famously fell asleep, earning it the nickname the "Sleeping Beauty" dress.

6. Designed by Catherine Walker. This white, military-inspired skirt suit adorned with gold frogging braids was worn during a visit to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1987.

7. Designed by Catherine Walker. A sleek, column style featuring a draped white silk bodice and a slim pink skirt, worn to a ballet performance in 1989.
