1 km short. Unprecedented conditions. Zero regrets.

A couple of weeks ago, Compass Rogues took on an extraordinary challenge: setting the world record for the highest sail on Nepal’s Kajin Sara Lake.

Off-grid conditions kept updates locked on the mountain, but here’s how the final push unfolded: An unseasonable cyclone triggered severe landslides and blanketed the route in deep snow.

After two grueling days of climbing—8 hours one day, 10 the next—the team reached the final ridge, just one kilometer from the lake.

With shelters collapsed and deep snow posing a clear, lethal risk, the team made the ultimate call: safety over the record.

The boats are waiting in Kathmandu, and Compass Rogues will be back after the winter season to complete the mission.
