The Atlas of Soft Decay is finally here! A photography book and travel guide through some of Europe’s most atmospheric places: old cemeteries, ossuaries, catacombs, ruins, and historic museums. Over twenty locations across seven European countries, connected by a common theme: decay does not always lead to disappearance, but it transforms things into something eternal.
The book will only be published if it reaches 150 preorders by Halloween. As a thank you for your support during the preorder campaign, your name will be printed in the first edition of the book :)
Preorder your copy through the link in my bio :) Thank you for being part of this journey!

A sneak peek into my book 😊
Atlas of Soft Decay is a travel guide and visual exploration to some of Europe’s most atmospheric places, including old cemeteries, ossuaries, catacombs, anatomical collections, ruined churches, and historic museums. The book is divided into seven chapters, each corresponding to a country in Europe: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, England, France, Italy, and The Netherlands. Each chapter features locations from that country, ranging from famous historical sites to obscure places, with text I wrote describing the history of the location and photos that I have personally taken. I am also including practical information for visiting each location, plus a few bonus lists, such as lists of additional medical collections or ossuaries in Europe not included in the main chapters.
The book will only be published if we reach at least 150 preorders by Halloween, and will include a list of names of those who preordered it, as a thank you for your support. Preorder your copy through the link in my bio!
Let me know if you have questions and I’ll answer in the comments 😊

🇦🇹 Early autumn at Hellbrunn Palace in Salzburg. I’m so happy that leaves are changing colour!
The garden of Hellbrunn Palace is one of my favourite places in Salzburg, and early October was a great time to visit (I didn’t visit this year though. Last week I only travelled to the Czech Republic).
.
What’s your favourite place to visit in October?

🇬🇧 The largest and best-preserved ossuary in England lies beneath St Leonard’s Church in Hythe, Kent. It holds the remains of thousands of people who died between the 12th and 15th centuries.

The ossuary of St Leonard’s Church is one of the many places featured in my new book, Atlas of Soft Decay. Check the link in my bio for a book preview and to preorder 😊

🇳🇱 September is one of my favourite months. It’s finally starting to get gloomy but it’s still warm enough to be outside, with the leaves starting to change colour. Pictured are a few impressions of September in The Netherlands over the years:
1-2: Countryside near Driebergen-Zeist
3-4: Rainbow Houses in Houten, south of Utrecht
5-6: Canals of Amsterdam
Where will you be this September?

🇬🇧 The town of Barnard Castle was a pleasant surprise in my trip to northern England. I went there to visit the Bowes Museum (in the 4th picture) but the town has a lot more to offer, including castle ruins and loads of charity shops. In the afternoon, after visiting the museum I also took a walk in the countryside to the nearby ruins of Egglestone Abbey (not pictured here, but I’ll make a dedicated post).
I reached Barnard Castle by bus from the city of Darlington. In the evening I went back to Darlington by bus and then got on a train to Leeds.
Have you ever heard of Barnard Castle?

🇬🇧 In my latest trip to England I discovered these incredible church ruins in Norfolk, in the village of Fulmodeston.
St Mary’s Church has medieval origins and was abandoned in 1882, when a new church was built nearby to serve the local community. Today, the crumbling remains stand within their old churchyard, quietly surviving at the edge of the village.
The ruins are located at the end of a country lane off Stibbard Road and they are hidden behind trees. The village of Fulmodeston is a 45-minute drive north of Norwich. (I usually travel with public transport, but buses to Fulmodeston seem to be very infrequent)

🇬🇧 The Poison Garden in Alnwick is one of the most unusual places I’ve visited in England, a botanical garden featuring over 100 species of toxic and narcotic plants. Due to the real danger these plants pose, the garden is under strict surveillance and can only be visited with a guided tour. Some of the plants are so toxic they have to be kept inside a cage.
I found the tour very interesting, as the guide told us a lot of stories related to the plants. It was summer when I visited (mid-August last year) and I’d love to go again during spring when some of the plants are in bloom.
Would you visit a poison garden?

🇬🇧 Nothing fills my heart with joy like a moody, unusual collection, whether it’s a museum of medical history or a Victorian cabinet of curiosities, and London has plenty of them. Featured here:
- Victor Wynd Museum of Curiosities
- Hunterian Museum
- Grant Museum of Zoology
- Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garrett
Have you been to any of these locations?

🇦🇹 Another beautifully preserved body is that of Saint Hilaria, on display in the Franciscan Church (Franziskanerkirche) in Vienna. Saint Hilaria was a martyr from Roman times, killed during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian.
Her body was brought to Vienna in the 18th century. Like with Blessed Anna Maria Taigi in Rome, Saint Hilaria’s remains had to be supplemented with wax for preservation.

🇮🇹 In 1480, the city of Otranto in Southern Italy was captured by invading Ottomans. According to tradition, around 800 men of Otranto were executed because they refused to renounce their Christian faith. They later became known as the Martyrs of Otranto, and their remains were displayed in the Chapel of Martyrs, which can be still visited today in the Cathedral of Otranto.

🇱🇰 Time to make another post about Sri Lanka, now that the temperatures in Europe are similar to what I had in Sri Lanka back in February.
This is the Brief Garden, designed by Sri Lankan landscape architect Bevis Bawa, who also lived on the property. In Sri Lanka, even a curated private garden can be a biodiversity hotspot, and owning such a garden is like having your own piece of jungle in your backyard. We were here for about one hour and saw countless birds, insects, squirrels, and even monkeys jumping on trees. Not to mention the variety of tropical plants!
The garden is located in the heart of the countryside, reachable by car, near the city of Beruwala. It’s open to the public, but an entry ticket is required to visit. We combined a visit to the garden with a lunch by the beach in Beruwala.
