Had the honor and privilege of promoting two new 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belts this past weekend.

Jon has been training with us since our first days at the gym, on a small square mat next to the old boxing ring. He was already a blue belt when he came to us, while I was just a brown belt. He’s been training with us ever since, and for 8 years he’s been a vital part of the team. He continues to keep up to date with the latest innovations in jiu jitsu, and nowadays I feel like I’m catching up to his knowledge. I have always admired his talent and humility and I’m excited to see his development as a black belt.

Joanne was also a blue belt when she first started training with us in 2019. She came to us when we had an “L” shaped mat space with a wall in the middle 😆 I remember the day she walked on the mat asking if she could roll with us. At first, I was a worried as there were no other girls and she was smaller than all the guys. However, she proved to be skilled and was easily handling bigger white belts and giving tough rounds to the colored belts. To this day, she has no fear of training with anyone and has been leading our women’s program with a passion that’s rare to find. In my eyes, she’s been a Black Belt for a long time as there is no questioning her dedication to the art.

Promoting people to black belt is a special feeling, and I’m happy to have helped such amazing people achieve a lifelong goal. Now as official Jedi Knights the journey truly begins 🙏🖤🥋 taken in 10th Planet Daly City by @ginofrancomma

Part 2 of the collar tie arm drag sequence, finishing with a Kouchi Gake trip. Theres plenty of judo technique in jiu jitsu but the goals are different. As you take the opponent down you must be mindful of the bottom players guard. In jiu jitsu getting them to the ground is only PART of the battle.
