…. arriving at a core edit for my application to an artist photobook masterclass. It’s a different way of working for me, coming to a tight edit from over 150 photographs instead of my usual process of editing, sequencing, dummy making, refining, reworking, dummy making etc till I arrive at something that feels right … #wip “Oscillation” … #artistbook…:

I am immensely proud to have made it this far, thank you everyone for your support and encouragement, it has meant the world to me. Here are some words to support the work…

“Quarries are sites of trauma and resistance, spaces of deconstructed mass and exploitation, of overwhelming magnificence and fascination; and beauty. What the Mountain Said unfolds around a spiritual and philosophical encounter with a mountain and its marble quarry. Set in a wild and remote corner of Almeria, Spain, first visited in 2019, then again in 2020 whilst on an off-grid artist residency with @joya_air, I was humbled by what I met. The photographs are an embodied response to this arbitrary space carved from the rock of silent seas laid down aeons ago. I worked alone on the mountainside, wrapped in silence, my being merging with the landscape, no sense of I. In nature there is no ego, no back chat, no white noise. Four visits, five years, and this photobook has finally emerged to tell its story, exploring the charisma of the inanimate.”

… towards an exhibition for @photofringe. Unusually for me I am collaborating with my friend and artist @elissajanediver for this show. We are making work all this month at Newhaven’s West Quay Beach; responding to its many faces in the wilds of our imagination, we are engaging with ideas around incorporeal time and material space to explore the unfixed, ongoing processes and interconnectedness. Our springboard is a quote from Doreen Massey, “Perhaps we could imagine space as a simultaneity of stories so far”.

… towards an exhibition, experimenting with rock pigments overlaying photographs of chalk cliffs, rephotographed: time and materiality clash. I collected fallen rocks from below the chalk cliffs at Newhaven and ground them to make a natural ochre pigment from this ferruginous Paleogene ironstone, some 57 million years old. by @ginrimjon
