Welcome to Harmattan.
In this book, we would like to accompany you on a journey through the imaginary — whether real or metaphysical — that takes shape in the photographs of young artists from West Africa. You may feel the warmth of the sun, the smell of grilled plantains or freshly peeled oranges; you may even think you hear the songs of a celebration honouring the ancestors.

An endless thank you to the Fotofestiwal team, for the warm welcome, and for the passion with which, for 25 years, they have celebrated photography and art in Łódź.
These days have been filled with meaningful encounters and inspiring conversations.
My gratitude goes to the artists, curators, and volunteers whose energy and dedication make this festival such a special place.

Nata dalla prima edizione del festival di fotografia del Togo tenutosi a Lomé nel dicembre 2025, la mostra riunisce le opere di artisti togolesi e internazionali, riflettendo la forza narrativa e visionaria della fotografia africana contemporanea attraverso immagini radicate nell'esperienza vissuta, nella memoria ancestrale, nella tradizione e nella trasformazione.

Two months ago we opened the first edition of Harmattan in Lomé — and already it feels wrapped in a sweet nostalgia. In those days, dense with encounters and beauty, every unforeseen twist unfolded into a creative possibility, every slowness revealed itself as quiet richness, every exchange of words gifted us renewed energy.

La vita oggi si basa sui traguardi e sulle tecnologie che la rendono possibile. Il filosofo Byung-Chul Han parla di uno stato di «soggettività da burnout» in cui ci sfruttiamo attivamente, diventando “imprenditori di noi stessi”.

In “Dictionary of Modern Love Terms” Sofia Guzzo osserva l’influenza di questa condizione sui sentimenti. I termini nel dizionario – nuove parole legate ai social media – descrivono “nuovi sentimenti” e schemi comportamentali che inducono una distanza sempre più meccanica nelle relazioni.

Il libro raccoglie fotografie nitide e sfocate di oggetti lasciati dopo degli appuntamenti.
Il blur è un simbolo visivo di un’epoca in cui realtà e riconoscimento diventano meno accessibili a causa della disattenzione, delle maschere digitali e dell’illusione di una scelta infinita.

🇸🇳 The Art Chapter weaves its journey together with the Malidoma Popenguine art residency, founded by Charlotte Brathwaite and Malick Welli in the village of Popenguine, Senegal. A place of encounter and creation, set to open its doors at the end of 2026.

The residency will also host a library: the NIOKOBOK Community Library, conceived as a space for sharing, memory, and the circulation of knowledge.

Participants in The Art Chapter are invited to donate a book, a gesture that will help shape the future library and allow them to share fragments of their editorial journey with the resident artists.

NIOKOBOK is a space for connection, offering books and resources to artists, researchers, and the local community. Rooted in the Wolof concept of niokobok, means “it’s ours to share,”.
