36yrs today: we celebrated our anniversary by escaping to a canyon that wasn’t on fire. Enjoyed getting away to spot with no reception or distractions. Went back to the camp spot we camped in on our honeymoon…. First time back in 36 years. Reminisced and laughed about that trip. We had slept under the stars… no tent. Had a great big rough hairy rope encircling our bags since we’d heard snakes wouldn’t like the texture and wouldn’t crawl over it to join us in our bags. We got freaked out sometime during the night when something close to us pawed the ground and began snorting…. Found out later it was an elk trying to flush out whatever smell it didn’t recognize. Finally got a little sleep….only to wake up surrounded by several head of cattle in our camp site. What a memory! 🐄 😂

8 yrs ago this same place was also taken over by fire. We were evacuated from our home for 10 days. Coming back to this spot now is a reminder of how things still grow and flourish in places that were horribly scarred.#lifesstillgood taken in Nebo Loop by @gizsmith

Went to bed last night around 2 ….didn’t sleep much. At that time, the map showed the fire a mile and a half from our property (pic 1) and woke up to the fire alerts going off on our phones. Looked at the map to see this disasterous change (pic 2). Yesterday it grew from 6000 to 10,000 acres. Don’t know the size now. It’s right on top of us now. Somehow the shabin camera shows it’s still standing- but guessing not much longer. Watched it off an on through the night. Parts of Meadow, Southern Kanosh and the reservation on GO status. The rest of Kanosh, Meadow and even parts of Fillmore on SET status. Told to stay out of the area west of I-15 from Fillmore to Kanosh, including avoid driving I-15 if possible. 6:50 AM US Forest Service: “The fire behavior is catastrophic and with the quick fire growth, it would be too dangerous to put firefighters in front of this fire. No amount of resources will stop this forward progression given the current conditions and predicted weather.” Critical fire weather conditions are expected. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for everyone impacted by this horrific fire and so praying for the safety of those fighting it. #shabinadventures #widemouth2fire taken in Fish Lake National Forest by @gizsmith

#widemouth2fire Drove down Tuesday evening to try to evacuate what we could from our property. So incredibly lucky Shane and Zach were so willing and able to come to our rescue and help us load things out. We could never have done it without them. Such a blessing they hadn’t closed the road up the canyon so we were able to get in and out ok. The wind gusts were crazy when first got into town but we didn’t experience them in the canyon. That fire tornado was a bit daunting to see - especially when it started moving towards us. While we were still loading, the evacuation status moved from Ready to Set so it was a good move to run down there when we did. Although as we came out of the canyon the winds had died down and things already looked much better than when we went in.( Found out later that eastward winds - which are very rare for that area- had come in and blown the fire back on itself). Hoping conditions continue to improve. So appreciate all the prayers!! Please keep them up. Things aren’t out of the woods- especially for the citizens in Kanosh. Last night at 5 PM a lightning strike started a fire. It shows no sign of containment and is running rapidly. It is now within 3 miles of our property. We are loading up to go down and try to rescue what we can but have been told they might not allow anyone in and many roads going in are closed. We could really use some prayers. #bellawood_fishlake by @gizsmith

Got to celebrate our first Lohri with our grandson this weekend. The Gill family and friends are always such a joy to be around. So fun to spend that time with everyone! BTW, a Lohri is a Punjabi event that is held at the beginning of the year to celebrate new additions to the family that have occurred in the previous year (in this case, Jovin). Lots of dancing, music and amazing food. Wishes of good fortune and prosperity are also shared as seeds are thrown into a bonfire. by @gizsmith

Anyone else get drawn to random rocks while out exploring nature? The little kid in me tends to come home with rocks in my pockets more than I care to admit. Today I got to play with a cabbing machine and see what some of the rocks could turn into. Thanks @jjrocks_22 #rockhoundingutah by @gizsmith
