For those of you who have watched photos and stories of our recreational property project the last four years, thanks for listening. It’s been a wonderful journey but it came to an end yesterday 8/3/2026 at 5:40pm. Having burned over 68k acres the Widemouth2 fire claimed its first structure. The Shabin.  We went down Tuesday night after the fire started Monday and got all the high value items out and off the property. We had a little Kasa camera we set in the back window knowing if the fire came it would be seen there. Powered by solar with an EcoFlow battery and Starlink. From the first frame of seeing a flame til everything was gone was only 10 minutes.

Now as we look at aerial shots of our property we realize it would have taken days and days of dozer work to clear enough trees around our property to be able to save it. As I’m sure you saw, the fire had progressed and formed an umbrella shape over us. If it had come from any of those directions it would have hit heavy trees. We were just too heavily wooded. We had tried to get in earlier but they said they couldn’t let us in til Sunday morning. Of course we all know how it exploded Saturday so it no longer became an option.

The video shows the absolute madness that a juniper forest fire is. Firefighters call junipers “green gas cans” and “gasoline bushes” for a reason. The final frame is when Starlink cut out.

We don’t know when we will be able to go down to the property and see exactly what’s left, but you’ll hear from us again at some point.

Went to bed last night around 2 ….didn’t sleep much. At that time, the map showed the fire a mile and a half from our property (pic 1) and woke up to the fire alerts going off on our phones. Looked at the map to see this disasterous change (pic 2). Yesterday it grew from 6000 to 10,000 acres. Don’t know the size now. It’s right on top of us now. Somehow the shabin camera shows it’s still standing- but guessing not much longer. Watched it off an on through the night. Parts of Meadow, Southern Kanosh and the reservation on GO status. The rest of Kanosh, Meadow and even parts of Fillmore on SET status. Told to stay out of the area west of I-15 from Fillmore to Kanosh, including avoid driving I-15 if possible. 6:50 AM US Forest Service: “The fire behavior is catastrophic and with the quick fire growth, it would be too dangerous to put firefighters in front of this fire. No amount of resources will stop this forward progression given the current conditions and predicted weather.” Critical fire weather conditions are expected. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 for everyone impacted by this horrific fire and so praying for the safety of those fighting it. #shabinadventures #widemouth2fire

Finally got the deck stairs and railings done. 200 crimps and 76 lengths of wire. It was time intensive but worth the effort. Liz made the beautiful flagstone landings.

A couple of aerial shots and proud Mary at 8475 feet. The closest I could get the truck was 1.2 miles away and the tip of the nip was 1450 feet up.
