what if butter was made to be on the table 👀

nobody thinks twice about butter. it lives in the fridge door, comes out, goes back. so the whole challenge with Churn was flipping that...

turning the thing you’d normally hide into the thing you actually want out on display at a dinner party.

started by digging through the category to find the gap. the direction pulled from whimsy dinner parties, dopamine table settings and fresh ingredients.

from there the personality kind of built itself. a custom typeface next to a whirly handwriting font, handmade but modern, no brown paper in sight (the usual artisan cliché, hard pass).

then those fresh ingredients came back as the icons and pattern, same hand drawn energy, so the brand had actual character and not just a look.

colours landed, packaging came together, and bish bash BOSH… all of a sudden butter had a whole personality.

spotted this brief on @briefclub and couldn’t not play around with it

full reveal coming sooooon 🙂

at some point a DIY brand stops being charming and starts holding you back.

you’ve got the product, the traction, maybe the listings. but the brand’s drifted, the touchpoints don’t match, and you can feel it capping your growth.

usually it’s because you’ve got pieces of a brand, not a system. a logo here, a colour there, a feed that doesn’t quite match the packaging. nothing holds together, so nothing compounds, and people buy once without ever really clocking who you are.

a Brand World Build fixes that. we take you from a brand identity to a brand system, strategy and design built properly, so every touchpoint feels like the same world and people stick around.

it’s for food and drink founders who’ve got traction and are ready to look like the brand you’re becoming.

if that’s you, tell us about your brand!

building a mushroom hot chocolate brand from scratch... phase 1, the strategy 🫡

before I think about a logo I need to know what the brand actually stands for. so meet Foray, a mushroom hot chocolate made for drifting into your dream state. rich, indulgent and a little bit magic.

everything leans into dreams, folklore and a little mischief. somewhere between A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Willy Wonka, for someone who lives half in a story.

inside: the idea, the customer, the moment it owns, the colours, the textures and the type. this is the foundation everything else gets built on.

part 2 next week is the brand identity. logos, icons, patterns, all the little bits that make it memorable.

if your brand was a person, what would they be doing on a tuesday afternoon?

#brandstrategy #drinksbranding #foodbranding #packagingdesign #brandidentity

mushrooms usually get sold as wellness. I wanted Foray to feel like a treat with a bit of magic instead, so that’s where everything starts.

these five words are the filter. if a colour, font or line of copy doesn’t feel dreamy, whimsical, mischievous, indulgent or enchanting, it doesn’t make the cut.

I design for the ‘one person’, not an age bracket. knowing the customer properly makes it so much easier to say no to ideas that don’t fit.

everyone has a moment in the day where their head wanders off. that’s the dream state, and it happens morning, afternoon or night. Foray is built to be part of that little escape.

one of my favourite exercises. if you can picture what a brand gets up to on a random tuesday, you can start to picture how it talks, what it posts and where it shows up.

I wanted the palette to feel like the woods at dusk in a fairytale. soft and a bit sugary so it feels like a treat, with a deep midnight to keep it grounded.

texture is how a brand feels before you’ve read a word. soft, shimmery, a bit old and inky, like it’s been left out in the woods.

three styles. a storybook serif for the logo, a slightly inky one for reading, and something hand-drawn for the mischief.

foundations done. next week I design the logo, the icons and all the little patterns. (the fun bit!!) by @glazedstudio_

your brand needs a moment to own. here’s how to find it:

because having a good product isn’t the only thing that makes people remember you. owning a moment in their day is.

for example, @trip.drinks own the moment you need calm. their messaging has pointed at it since 2019, and every range they’ve launched still sits inside it.

three questions i ask when we’re looking for a brand’s ownable moment:

→ what’s happening in the 10 minutes before someone needs your product?
not who that person is, but what’s going on for them. for Trip, it’s the point where the day’s been a lot and you want to switch off without reaching for a savvy b

→ how do you want them to feel after they’ve had it?
Trip’s is feeling like yourself. not escaping the day, because there’s no escaping it, just being alright inside it

→ will that same moment still fit whatever you launch next?
think about the ranges you haven’t launched yet. do they all sit in that same moment. Trip went from one type of drink to a completely different range with different ingredients and none of it felt off-brand, because the moment never changed

those three answers start to form your moment. then you run with it and make sure you show up there every. single. time.

Trip’s cans are soft pastels, barely any copy, nothing shouting at you. it feels like the moment before you know anything about the brand. their campaign this month is calm in the chaos, and they’ve had a partnership going with the Calm app for years

so now it’s second nature. it’s the thing the whole brand revolves around

and once it’s properly yours, it works when you’re not even in the room!!

this is the bit I do first on every brand world build. before any design, get the moment right and the rest of the brand grows around it :)

ok so my favourite part of a whole brand build is the very end

because up until then a brand is flat. you’ve got your identity, the logo, the colour, the type, and it all looks lovely sat on a page. but it’s still a page.

the third phase of every build i work on is where that turns into a world. where the brand actually lives, how it shows up, how it sounds, what it feels like to be near it.

and that’s the bit that keeps you consistent with it afterwards, because once you can see the whole vision you know what fits and what doesn’t.

you can launch a new product or a new range or a whole new space and it still feels like you, instead of rebuilding the brand every couple of years because not everybody had the same vision in their head.

this one’s OPTICS, the gin from space ✌️

if you’re building something in food or drink, let’s give it a world to live in 👽

who decided premium had to be boring?

OPTICS is a gin distilled at temperatures so far below freezing the process sounds less like a distillery and more like something that was made in a lab. that’s where the whole thing came from. if the way it’s made is that
cold and that precise, the brand can’t be warm and familiar,

it has to feel like it arrived from somewhere else.

so everything in this world sits just slightly wrong on purpose. the wordmark looks like it’s melting off the bottle. the scenes are frozen, still, silent.
that’s not a mood board thing, it’s the process made visible.

and it isn’t a party drink. it’s the one you pour on your own before anything has started, the quiet bit at the beginning of the night. that’s the moment the
whole brand is built around, which is why nothing here is loud or crowded.

then the recipe card on lined lab paper and the branded cocktail set are what take it past being a bottle. that’s the point where a gin stops being a product and starts being something people want to live around, and that’s the actual job of a brand world.

premium drinks branding usually goes thin fonts, white space, gold foil if it’s feeling wild. it all says expensive and nothing else. clinical does not have to mean beige, and serious doesn’t have to mean boring.

so if you’re building something in food or drink and blending in makes you feel a bit ill, hi 👋 lets work together!

what if gin came from space 👀

not literally but an ultra-premium gin that’s so specific with the distilling process its like it was made in a lab.

which is exactly where this world came from! every other bottle is the same on the shelf (to the average person like me) went a bit innovative with the bottle and really leaning in to this scientific almost area 51 lab style i’m kinda obsessed.

‘clinical’ does not have to mean thin fonts and loads of white space, that’s just the default everyone reaches for.

fun packaging is my favourite thing to work on at the moment 👽

i can’t wait to show you the reveal!!

most people think a brand stops at the packaging

but that’s where it starts.

it lives on the menu, on the sign, on the receipt, on whatever’s in their hand at the end of the night. all the stuff around the product that never makes it onto a brief.

and it goes past the physical too. it lives in what someone remembers, and how they felt when they used it. neither of those is on the label.

all of those places added up is the experience. that’s the thing you’re actually designing. how people use it, whether they hand it to a mate or whether they photograph it without being asked to.

that’s the part most people leave to chance, and it’s the part people remember.

so before you brief a label, work out what you want someone to feel after the thing is gone. then design backwards from that.

so, where does your brand live after the product’s gone?
