It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of one of our most distinguished alumni, Abdul Ghafoor Noorani, at the age of 93. A celebrated constitutional expert, lawyer, and author, Noorani leaves behind a legacy of unwavering commitment to justice, legal scholarship, and the pursuit of truth.

An eminent scholar, Noorani was a notable voice on issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir, a region that deeply mourns his loss today. From the hallowed halls of the Bombay High Court to the topmost court of the land, his legal acumen and dedication to justice earned him great respect and recognition.

Throughout his illustrious career, Noorani stood as a beacon of hope during challenging times. He played a critical role in defending several leading figures, including Sheikh Abdullah during his detention and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, showcasing his commitment to justice and human rights.

In recent years, Noorani became a sharp and incisive commentator on critical legal issues, offering his perspective on key judgments of the Supreme Court. With a profound understanding of both British India and post-Independence ideologies, he did not shy away from criticizing what he perceived as a gradual degeneration of the legal system. His opinions, shared through esteemed publications such as The Statesman, Frontline, Economic & Political Weekly, The Hindustan Times, and The Hindu, have left an indelible mark on the legal and academic communities, often being cited in Supreme Court judgments.

As an author, Noorani made significant contributions to the fields of constitutional law, politics, and history. His notable works, including The Kashmir Question (1964), Ministers' Misconduct (1973), Constitutional Questions and Citizens' Rights (2006), and The RSS: A Menace to India (2019), continue to serve as invaluable resources for scholars, students, and practitioners. His biographies of Badruddin Tyabji and Dr. Zakir Hussain further highlight his dedication to chronicling the lives of those who shaped India's history.
