In Ireland last semester, Nickie Deschaine ‘27 studied abroad at University College Dublin’s School of Agriculture and Food Science.

“The best part of the experience was getting the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and live in a country where I didn’t know anyone.”

“I had the chance to take courses in plant nutrition and management, agricultural policy in the EU, and even a Discovering Ireland course that allowed me to explore some truly amazing places throughout the country.”

“The friends I made along the way were incredibly welcoming and quickly made Ireland feel like home. The experience flew by, but it was truly some of the best months of my life.”

“I fell in love with the Irish culture, the people, and the beauty of the country. I would highly recommend Ireland to anyone looking for a place to study abroad.” by @global_cornell

“This summer, I was one of three students participating in a Global Internship in Pamplona, Spain. This was an unforgettable experience shared with two incredible peers at the Universidad Pública de Navarra.” - Lucia Thiessen-Rodriguez ‘28 from @cornellcas

“I had the privilege of completing two projects…

“Firstly I applied and analyzed two theories on terrorist radicalization to case study’s from last year’s interns. This was my supervisor’s area of study and I learned extensively about the topic from his book ‘Violence, Politics, and Religion: A General Theory of Violent Radicalization.’ I am indebted to Sergio García Magariño for his expertise!”

“Secondly, I researched American Alien Tort Statute cases for a professor studying comparative human rights law. This was especially interesting given that the Supreme Court decision in Cisco v. Doe was announced while I was abroad. For this project, my findings were written in Spanish!”

Search “Global Internship” on experience.cornell.edu to see more about this opportunity and other internships. Applications open this fall for next summer! by @global_cornell

“Leadership-in-action means being there for others,” says Laidlaw scholar Hazel Ann Abdon ‘29. “It means to be the relator and become the bridge among different communities and ideas.”

For Hazel’s leadership-in-action experience this summer, they’re interning at Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon in Peru, studying the relationship between plant growth, sunlight exposure, and soil quality of young Spiked Pepper trees.

On site, they measure and compare the trees’ traits like soil pH, phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen, luminosity, growth in tree canopy, height, and leaf measurements.

“Understanding the environment is important for decision-making to avoid permanent habitat destruction, threatened biodiversity, and heightened climate change.”

Hazel’s independent research experience gave them new skills to bring back to their studies as civil engineering major at @cornelleng.

“I enhanced my observation, hearing, and identification skills. This is helpful for civil engineering when conducting risk assessments and problem solving. Other useful skills were coding in R Studio, basic mapping skills in QGIS, soil chemistry, light study, science communication, navigation, and especially time management.”

“When I think of me as a leader, I imagine myself connecting and accepting others despite differences. After all, it is what makes us unique - our differences. I believe leaders are the ones that act and bring others together even when conflict arises.” Laidlaw scholar Hazel Ann Abdon measures and records measurements of a Spiked Pepper tree. by @global_cornell

What if a simple water test could reveal the health of an entire ecosystem?

Cornell Ph.D. student Isabella Errigo is working alongside Indigenous conservation partners in the Ecuadorian Amazon to collect environmental DNA (eDNA) -- tiny traces of genetic material left behind by fish, insects, and other organisms. By analyzing these samples, researchers and local communities can understand how gold mining and other human activities are affecting biodiversity in some of the world's most important river systems.

Isabella's research is about more than data. Together, the team is building a long-term monitoring effort that equips local conservation leaders with scientific tools to help protect the rivers they know best.

The research is supported by a Sustainable Biodiversity Fund grant from Cornell Atkinson and by a Global Hubs seed grant from Global Cornell. A person crouches on rocky terrain by a river, smiling at the camera. They are conducting a water sampling experiment, using a filtration setup with tubes and beakers. Nearby, there are two buckets, one red and one blue. The background shows flowing water and lush greenery. taken in Cornell University by @global_cornell

One person’s waste is another person’s gold 💡

In Kisumu, Kenya 🇰🇪 @cornelluniversity researchers and local partners are transforming human excreta into a safe fertilizer that supports crop production, improves public health, and helps protect Lake Victoria.

The project is putting circular economy principles into practice — recovering nutrients that would otherwise be lost and returning them to the soil, where they’re needed most.

It’s a powerful example of how research can connect sanitation, agriculture, environmental health, and economic opportunity to create solutions with real-world impact.

Swipe ➡️ to learn how the team is turning a local challenge into an innovative sustainability solution. Learn more at the link in our bio.

🤝 Partners include: Rebecca Nelson, @cornelluniversitycals , Charles Midega, Poverty and Health Integrated Solutions, Maseno University, Fresh Life, Roy Odawa, Kisumu Young Agripreneurs (KIYA), and KIYA’s network of 1,000 farmers in Kisumu, with support from Cornell @atkinsoncenter for Sustainability and the @mcknightfdn One person’s waste is another one’s gold. A Cornell researcher and her African colleagues are collecting human excreta from informal settlements in Kenya, processing it to remove pathogens, and turning it into affordable, high-quality agricultural fertilizer – called KIYA Gold – that is nourishing plants while protecting human health and the environment. taken in Kisumu Kenya by @global_cornell

Fulbrighter and @cornellalumni Alexis Anderson ’23 has one month left in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Over the past year, she has researched Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease - an aggressive coral disease that is rapidly spreading in the Caribbean and decimating reefs.

And, she has taken steps to help improve the ecosystem: replanting coral fragments, leading a bilingual fisheries workshop, testing the water at over 50 sites, and creating a new coastal ocean acidification monitoring program.

“My #Fulbright year has been one of the most fulfilling and transformative experiences, and the best part has been the community,” she said. “Since day one, I have felt immense warmth and kindness from everyone. Thank you to the @the_fulbright_program and Cornell’s Einaudi Center for International Studies for making this year possible. And to @bica.hn for all the support and incredible conservation work you do every day.” taken in Honduras by @global_cornell
