Night of a lifetime

There are many moments in the field that leave me thinking I will remember them for the rest of my life, but there may not be an encounter that has left an impression quite like this one.

My study abroad group @otsglobal_ was lucky enough to tag along with Kruger scientists to observe large carnivore surveys for a night, where we came across this lion.

I could not have been prepared for the feeling that came from somewhere deep in my subconscious locking eyes with a wild lion. Simultaneously the stuff of childhood fantasy and terrifying, in the most primal of ways.

It feels stereotypical and touristy to talk so much about lions, but I do think there is a unique human connection to an animal so widely revered, feared, and interpreted across human society and time. It’s been two weeks and I still can’t stop thinking about it. Nothing quite like it.

🎉 🥉 Congratulations to our third-place SIT Photo Contest winner, Elsa Marshall from @cornelluniversity! Elsa participated in our Summer 2026 India Traditional Medicine and Healthcare Practices program and describes her photo below:

"This was during our independent travel days during the summer 2026 term. We were in Jaipur touring Amber Fort. It was the first time in India that our group of 8 successfully navigated and executed an excursion on our own without the directors. We thoroughly enjoyed the architectural and historical beauty of Amber Fort. We also realized how much our cross-cultural interactions and ability to navigate in an unknown place had developed since being in India. We were able to bargain for two auto rickshaws on the way there and swerve through the clumps of tour guides urging us to use them, even though we didn't want a tour guide. We stopped at this lovely view on the walk up towards the entrance to take photos and enjoy the view of the fort from below. This photo is of me."

Our inaugural Global Start Cantabria cohort is thriving as they begin their first academic year at Cornell, living and learning in Santander, Spain, at the Universidad de Cantabria! 🐻 🌏

This week, Liane Fitzgerald and Ryan Delaney from our Engineering Advising office visited Santander to connect with the students, help them develop their academic plans, and support them as they embark on this exciting new chapter.

We’re thrilled to see our inaugural cohort settling into life in Santander and making the most of this unique global learning experience!

Summer research spotlight: War and peace: understanding uneven peace agreement outcomes across Colombia

This summer, Sebastian Restrepo, a doctoral candidate in city and regional planning, traversed territories in Colombia to examine the uneven implementation of the 2016 Colombian Peace Agreement with the goal of understanding what helps or hinders the process.

“While theory helps explain institutional dynamics, interviews and territorial observation provide insights into informal relationships, local constraints, and governance mechanisms that are difficult to capture through documents or datasets,” he said.

He knew prior to departing for his summer research travel that the peace agreement’s effects looked different across territories, but was surprised to find national policies are also experienced differently across the country. With this knowledge, he hopes to inform academic debates and public policy discussions about governance and peacebuilding.

Summer research spotlight: Comprehending community-forest connections in Colombia

In the Andean forests this summer, Elizabeth Gallego, a master’s student in natural resources and the environment, spent time conducting research in partnership with local communities and members of social and environmental movements, seeking to better understand how conflict influences communities’ relationships to forests.

“An understanding of the dynamics between rural communities and the forest cannot be gained solely from a classroom; it is necessary to go into the field,” she said. “Fieldwork is at the heart of the research process.”

Her travel not only provided clarity into forest use, but uncovered information that could lead to new, more effective strategies to reduce deforestation, promote conservation, and strengthen commitments to restoration.

Studying abroad in Barcelona wasn't something Grace Carlson ’27 imagined for herself when she was attending community college.

Now a fashion design management major in Cornell Human Centered Design, Grace spent the spring semester in Spain, challenging herself to step outside her comfort zone, navigate a new culture and language, and gain a broader perspective on the world around her.

She says her experience transferring to Cornell helped prepare her for the transition, teaching her how to adapt to new environments, build community and embrace unfamiliar opportunities.

Her advice for future transfer students: remember that you belong here.

In Cornell Human Ecology, transfer students bring their stories, passions and resilience with them and find communities that help them thrive.
