These are the foods that warm both body and soul—the recipes we remember from childhood, from our grandmothers’ kitchens, or perhaps only from the stories passed down through our families.

This October, we invite you into Gabriela’s kitchen for Slovak Comfort Cooking, a 4-week live cooking program celebrating the flavors, traditions and stories of Slovak home cooking.

Four Generations Later, Zachary Is in Slovakia

More than a century after his family’s Slovak story began moving west, Zachary Haug is now in Slovakia—exploring the country that has always been part of his family identity.

Zachary is a fourth-generation Slovak descendant from Lubbock, Texas. He grew up knowing that his mother’s family was Slovak, but like many descendants, that heritage lived mostly through family stories.

Over the years, his connection to Europe grew stronger. He returned often, spent summers there, and gradually began asking a deeper question:

What would it mean to make Slovakia part of my own life—not simply my family’s past?

Now, that question is becoming something real.

Because Zachary is a fourth-generation descendant, direct Slovak citizenship by descent is not the pathway available to him. Instead, he is pursuing the Slovak Living Abroad Certificate (SLA).

And while he works toward that goal, he is also doing something just as meaningful: experiencing Slovakia for himself.

Walking its streets. Discovering its places. Learning more about the country his family once called home.

Four generations later, the connection is still there—and Zachary is choosing to make it stronger.
