You only turn 30 once, so I wanted to make it a celebration fit for a royal court. 👑✨ And for someone who has always dreamed of celebrating like a princess in a palace, Kaštieľ Pálffy @kastielpalffy in Slovakia was the obvious choice.

Our Renaissance-themed birthday celebration brought together history, beautiful gowns, wonderful food and my favourite people. Naturally, I dressed my guests for the occasion! Seeing the ladies in my handmade HERITAGE @claimyourheritage gowns, followed by a photoshoot through the château’s interiors and courtyard, was a dream come true. 🏰

We celebrated in the Palatín restaurant, where the team let me bring my vision to life with my own decorations. The beautiful setting, attentive service and exceptional fine dining made the evening truly special. Our delicious three-course meal featured confit duck leg with braised cabbage and apple, caraway duck jus, roasted onion, roasted apple purée and a potato lokša — a traditional Slovak flatbread. A beautiful tribute to Slovakia’s autumn goose and duck feasts, complete with dessert!

We toasted with locally produced VIAJUR Sekt Blanc de Noir 2023 Extra Dry, from the winery housed in the château’s historic cellars. And the label featured a familiar face: my beloved @trollometer , as the Palatine of course. 😜🍾

Then came the grand finale surprise from my bff @simonasparrow with the work-of-art cake by @ivamora.pastry and fireworks in the courtyard! I had my little #marieantoinette at Versailles moment. 🥹 A touch theatrical? Absolutely. 😎 Everything I’d dreamed of? Even more so. 🎂✨

#slovakia has so many extraordinary places where history becomes part of your own story. Whether you’re planning a birthday #party , wedding, conference or reunion that brings loved ones home from abroad, its château hotels and historic venues offer something truly special. Kaštieľ Pálffy has my wholehearted recommendation. 🤍🇸🇰

I loved planning every detail, from the costumes to the table decorations… and I’d love to create more occasions like it.

Would you love a historical-themed party of your own, complete with beautiful gowns and a château setti

🇸🇰 Do you have Slovak roots but never learned to speak Slovak? This is your sign.✨♥️

Maybe your grandparents spoke Slovak. Maybe you grew up hearing little phrases at family gatherings. Or maybe you have Slovak ancestry and have always wanted to feel a little closer to where your family came from.

Whatever your story is, it’s never too late to learn the language of your roots. 🇸🇰✨

I’m an American learning Slovak, and this journey has become so much more than learning new words and grammar. It’s about connecting with a culture, discovering my roots, and showing others that you don’t have to be a native speaker to begin.

That’s why I’m so excited to be learning with Global Slovakia! ❤️ They’re helping make Slovak language and culture more accessible, and I hope my journey inspires more Americans with Slovak ancestry to give their heritage a chance to speak again.

Imagine being able to understand your grandparents’ words, have a conversation with relatives in Slovakia, or simply say „Dobrý deň, ako sa máte?“ and know what you’re saying. 🥹

You don’t have to be fluent to start. You just have to start.

🇸🇰 If you’re Slovak American, tell me in the comments: Did your family pass down the Slovak language, or would you love to learn it yourself?

Let’s bring a little more Slovak into the world! ❤️🤍💙

The first episode of Slovakia through my eyes launched last week on ‘Slovakia Today’ on Radio Slovakia International.

Opening the Show, my colleagues took a look at Slovakia’s biggest education reform in 20 years, starting off the new school year.

At a recent press conference, Education Minister Tomáš Drucker, experts from NIVaM, school leaders and teachers discussed why the changes are needed and what they mean for pupils, educators and schools.

Following this, my new series Slovakia Through My Eyes.

Katarina from Ukraine asked a question many parents here live with: how do you enrol a child in school when they do not speak Slovak and how can they integrate with ease? 🇺🇦 🇸🇰
Marek Kotman from the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic joins the show to answer it — clearly, practically, and without the usual runaround.

This is what the show is for, real questions from foreigners living in Slovakia with real answers from people who can actually help.

Listen today in the archive on @rsi_en . We are on every second Wednesday at 4pm.

If you have a question of your own — residency, emergencies, culture, school, work — send it. We will take it on air.

Next week joining me in studio is @dr.zuzanapalovic from @globalslovakia. Tune in on Wednesday and hear all about discovering your Slovak roots :)

From homeless refugee to millionaire.

When Dr Jan Telenský arrived in Britain in 1969, he had just £2 in his pocket. With nowhere to stay, he spent his first weeks sleeping under a tree in a cemetery. Decades later, he has built successful businesses across the UK and Slovakia, including AquaCity Poprad.

But his story is about much more than business.

Dr Telenský proudly describes himself as Czechoslovak and has spent decades supporting Czech and Slovak communities, culture, music, education and people who needed help.

We recently had the privilege of filming him for our upcoming documentary Portraits of Slovak & Czech Britain. 🎥

We are also incredibly grateful for his continued support of Slovak Theatre London. This is the third time he has supported our work—previously our Portraits exhibition, and now as the principal private sponsor of our documentary film.

There are many successful businesspeople. Far fewer choose to use that success to genuinely help others.

Among many he helped are also the founders of @globalslovakia whose first book publication he made possible. They are also featured in our documentary film.

Thank you, Dr Jan Telenský, for believing in our work and helping us preserve these stories for future generations. ❤️
