The 2026-2027 George Mason University Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble! Follow this page for more details on our upcoming performances.

The GMUTEE has been in existence for over 17 years. They draw from a diversified student population of music majors, music minors, and non-majors. They have performed at six regional conferences and nine international conferences as well as many appearances on and off the local GMU campus and have become known as a nationally recognized group by the International Tuba Euphonium Association. GMUTEE has commissioned and performed over 12 new works for tuba/euphonium ensemble from seven different composers including Kevin Day and Wycliffe Gordon. The group remains as front runner of the low brass department for recruiting students to enjoy and play chamber music and is led by Professors Dr. Max Crofton, Tuba and Dr. Mark Jenkins, Euphonium. The instruction includes understanding and applying the artistic process, vocabulary and analysis, historical and cultural perspective, and utilizing these skills into their own musicianship. Recently, part of the ensemble competed in and won the 2025 International Tuba Euphonium Festival Chamber Competition in Atlanta, GA. GMUTEE has also been invited to perform at the 2027 US Army Band Tuba/Euphonium Workshop in Washington, DC.

The group remains as a front runner of the low brass department for recruiting students to enjoy and play chamber music. They strive to represent the musical capabilities of tuba and euphonium by performing new and commissioned works explicitly for them as well as transcriptions of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Jazz, Rock, and Modern music. taken in George Mason University by @gmubrass

📯 DISTRICT XI HORN PLAYERS — THIS ONE’S FOR YOU! 💚💛

As you prepare for the 2026–2027 District XI Honor Band auditions, spend some time learning from Dr. Caroline Steiger, Director of Brass and Associate Professor of Horn at George Mason University, as she performs and works through this year’s District XI Horn Etude.

Dr. Steiger is an active performer, clinician, and educator whose career has included performances with the San Antonio Philharmonic, San Antonio Symphony, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. She has presented and performed at conferences of the International Horn Society, Texas Music Educators Association, and International Women’s Brass Conference.

A graduate of the University of Michigan and Penn State University, Dr. Steiger brings a wealth of experience to the Mason Brass community—and we’re excited to share her expertise with young musicians throughout our region.

🎶 Horn players: grab your instrument, pull out your etude, and play along with Dr. Steiger!

Best wishes to all of our District XI students as you prepare for auditions. We hope this resource helps you practice with confidence and make some great music along the way. by @gmubrass

Re-working up the Tuba Tiger Rag for an upcoming performance at the @washingtondcmusicteachers WMTA Conference @howardumusic on September 27. I’ve always loved closing our concerts with the Tuba Tiger Rag as it’s an exciting and interactive piece for both the performers and audience. It’s been a few years since I’ve performed this work and I’m excited to bring it back. Some things I’m focusing on in my practice: 1. Keeping consistent style throughout the piece and the energy engaging. 2. Always thinking musically whether I’m playing the melody or a bass line. 3. Keeping time and staying light and focused. Really looking forward to performing this along with my colleagues! taken in Washington D. C. by @gmubrass
