I’m excited to announce that I have accepted a new position to be a full-time golf instructor under Chase Cooper at KickingBird Golf!

When I created the OKC Golf Lab account, I was at my old accounting job dreaming of something more fulfilling. I never imagined that it would grow to where it is today. Every bit of that success is due to people like you who have engaged with the content of the page and especially those of you who have come to me for golf lessons! I truly cannot thank you enough.

It was a very difficult decision to leave my position as the boy’s golf coach at Edmond Santa Fe. Telling my team was hands down the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I will always cherish my time as the Wolves’ head coach and these last two years have such a special place in my heart.

As I began teaching golf lessons again last summer, I started to feel the flicker of a dream that I had basically given up on years ago. This next chapter will give me an even greater opportunity to hone my skills under the tutelage of one of the best golf instructors I’ve ever seen, Chase Cooper. KickingBird is a world class facility and in my opinion the best public golf facility in the state of Oklahoma. For those of you who might not know, I worked there all through college so this feels like coming home.

If you’ve made it this far, I truly believe that I can become one of the top golf instructors in the state of Oklahoma and I plan on working diligently to achieve that goal.

Thank you so much for your support. I’m eternally grateful to everyone who has come along on this journey up to this point. I’m so proud of what this account has grown into, but we are just getting started!

This is a drill I used growing up with my coach Mike Blonien.

It’s a great simple cue to move the low-point of your golf swing past the golf ball which is a huge fundamental.

Save this video and try it next time you go to the range.

Comment “YouTube” and I’ll send you the link to the full video.

This might be one of the easiest ways to train a better backswing.

If you tend to drop or collapse during your backswing, this resistance-band drill helps you feel how to load and turn while maintaining better height.

That’s what I like about band drills: rather than trying to manufacture a position, the resistance helps your body feel the movement you’re trying to create.

I got this one from @jacksonkgolf & @cordie_golfwell’s video, which has five really useful band drills for improving different pieces of the golf swing.

It’s one of those videos worth saving and actually taking to the range. by @golfcoachwig

If you hit the pool noodle, you found the problem.

A lot of slicers deliver the club too far from the outside, creating that across-the-ball motion through impact.

For this drill, angle an alignment stick over the ball and place a pool noodle on it about one foot above the golf ball. @theswingplate is a great tool that makes setup very quick.

Your job: swing underneath the noodle without touching it.

It’s a simple constraint that helps you feel a less outside-in club path without overthinking your swing.

But don’t forget: a better path alone won’t automatically fix your slice. The clubface also has to be more square to the path. An open face can still send the ball curving to the right.

Path + face. You need both.

A reverse pivot can make it tough to create a powerful, repeatable backswing.

Try this simple drill to improve your turn and load into the trail side:

1. Set an alignment stick on the ground just inside your trail foot.

2. Put a club across your shoulders with the grip pointing toward the target.

3. Make your backswing and rotate until the grip lines up with the stick on the ground.

This gives you a simple visual for creating a better pivot instead of letting your upper body drift toward the target.

Build a better turn, create a better backswing, and give yourself a much better chance to strike the ball solid.

Want more compressed golf shots?

Start by improving how your arms and torso work together.

The @scottcowxcertified Spoon Drill is a great way to train:

🥄 Better connection between the arms and body
🥄 A more organized pivot through impact
🥄 Less independent arm movement
🥄 More forward pressure and compression

The goal isn’t to hold your arms against your body. It’s to keep the arms and torso working together while the body continues to rotate through the shot.

Start with shorter swings, keep the motion controlled and build toward crisp, compressed contact.

This is a great drill is you get flippy through impact and struggle with hooks.

Save this drill for your next range session.

Birthdays are always a time when I find myself taking stock of where I am and looking back. Something about the passing of another year that makes it feel like a good place for reflection.

It’s been two years since I embarked on this journey into full-time golf instruction. It was never something I set out to do but it’s where the steps led me. My wife and I were talking about our journeys separately and together, and one thing I’m most proud of is our willingness to listen to the quiet voice of the Lord for the next step to take. If you’re faithful over the small things, he will bless them. My life is a living testimony to that! Every good thing in my life is a gift from my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thank you all for coming along on this journey! It’s crazy to look at how far this page has come from making it on my lunch break one day at a job where I was feeling hopeless and stuck! Thank you to @chasecoopergolf for giving me a chance when he could have found someone more qualified.

And lastly a truly heartfelt thank you to every single person that has come in for a lesson! It’s such a privilege to provide for my family via the game that has been my passion my whole life. No coach has all of the answers, but I promise I will always give you my best and I deeply care about giving my players the best chance to improve! by @golfcoachwig

You need this chip shot in your toolkit!

Once you master this, then you can adjust ball position for higher or lower shots.

Home base chip shot keys:
• ball middle of stance
• feet fairly close together
• neutral shaft lean
• use big muscles more than hands
