Boyz n the Hood is often viewed as John Singleton’s personal story, but @golianopoulos explains why the legendary filmmaker was reluctant to draw too many direct comparisons between the film and his own life. 🎬 by @golianopoulos

John Singleton’s Four Brothers was released in theaters on this date twenty years ago. Here’s how the film came together.

Sometime in 2004, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura cooked up an elevator pitch: an R-rated revenge movie centering on foster brothers. He then commissioned a draft from writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett. With a script in hand, he targeted John Woo to direct. Woo passed. LdB then reached out to Singleton, who he’d worked with as an executive on Rosewood.

(BTW, the title came from an interlude on NWA’s 100 Miles and Runnin’. “This one goes out to the four brothers from Compton…”)

Singleton recognized early on that the film’s success hinged on casting the four Mercer brothers. For the lead role of Bobby, he turned to Mark Wahlberg, the rapper-turned-actor he first met on the Sony lot in 1993. They shared a passion for the movies and nightlife, partying together at Centro-Fly and Cheetah when Singleton lived in NYC while filming Shaft.

“We always talked about working together,” Wahlberg told me. “John was the kind of guy you wanted to spend time with. He was charismatic, charming. He was funny. He was gangster-a guy’s guy for sure.”

Production started in Toronto in early 2005.

Four Brothers would’ve been a much different, and much less effective, film in the hands of another filmmaker. Singleton nailed the casting and seemed to make the right decision at each turn such as opting for a Motown score/soundtrack (Paramount wanted rap music) and reinserting the Thanksgiving dinner scene that gave the film its heart. It would be his fourth number one movie.

The Life of Singleton: From Boyz N the Hood to Snowfall will be in book stores on October 14. Pre-order link in bio
