We need to talk about Brandon Mashandudze for a second. The boy is in Grade 9, and he’s already thinking about how artificial intelligence could help doctors detect lung cancer earlier.

Brandon, from Mahikeng, has just been named an American Lung Cancer Scholar for his research, earning international recognition for a project that could one day make a real difference.

And we love what he said about not waiting until you’re older to start researching something that interests you. You don’t have to have everything figured out to get started. Sometimes you just need a question you really want to answer.

The robotics team from Cape Recife High School in the Eastern Cape has just taken first place in a national STEM competition, beating 142 other teams. Their idea? Turning plastic bottles into sports equipment using 3D printing. How cool is that?

They’ve also won R100,000 for their school to buy new STEM equipment, and they’ve already put their idea to work by making shin pads for children at a care centre in Gqeberha.

We love seeing young South Africans use their brains to solve real problems and help other people along the way.

We love a good idea that does good in more ways than one 😍

KWIKSPAR Alphen Constantia in Cape Town has raised around R107,000 for FoodForward SA by selling food that would otherwise go to waste. Instead of throwing it away, they pop it into discounted Surprise Bags for shoppers to buy.

So, people get cheaper groceries, perfectly good food stays out of the bin, and every rand made from those sales goes towards helping South Africans facing hunger.

How lekker is that? A little less waste, a little more help where it’s needed, and a reminder that sometimes a simple idea can make a real difference.

The Twelve Apostles Terrace at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has officially been named Africa’s Best MICE Event Venue at the 2026 World MICE Awards, proudly defending the title it scooped up last year.

The winners were celebrated on 12 October at a ceremony held at Princess Grand Jamaica. Part of the prestigious World Travel Awards portfolio, the World MICE Awards recognise global excellence across the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector.

Early this month, the Sound of Children Choir Festival took place at the Linder Auditorium at Wits.

Hosted by The Ridge School, junior choirs including St Peter’s Girls Prep, St Andrew’s School for Girls Preparatory, Pridwin Preparatory School, and @stjohns_college’s stood side by side and sang together.

One charming performance that found its way out of the auditorium and onto social media was by the St John’s Upper One boys.

The little ones in Grade 3 put on a show-stopping performance of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, including ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Heal the World,’ which warmed everyone’s hearts!

@glenrosesupercharge has another reason to celebrate, with the South African distance runner listed among the athletes holding Gold Status on World Athletics’ 2026 road-racing list.

The recognition comes during a remarkable period for the Boxer Athletics Club star, who has continued to make her mark on the local and international running scene through a string of impressive performances.

Earlier this month, Xaba made history at the Jozi SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge in Johannesburg, winning the race in 32 minutes and 26 seconds to secure her fourth SPAR Grand Prix title. She became the first athlete to win the series four times, adding another milestone to an already impressive career.

Her success follows another landmark achievement in 2025, when she became the first South African athlete to win all five races in a single SPAR Grand Prix season.
