In 1852, Frederick Douglass said the quiet part out loud.

“This Fourth of July is yours, not mine.”

174 years later — we are still performing.

Black student-athletes fill the stadiums, carry the brands, and generate the revenue that funds entire university systems. And in the same states where those universities celebrate their Black athletes on Saturdays, state legislatures spend the rest of the week drawing maps designed to dilute Black political power.

The NAACP said it plainly: Black athletes should not be asked to generate wealth, prestige, and power for state institutions while those same states strip political power from Black communities.

The midterms are not an abstraction from sport. They are the game happening in the background while everyone is watching the highlights.

En Garde.

Miranda Wynne Freedman has spent her entire collegiate career in a fighting stance — not against opponents, but against every system that told athletes they had to leave part of themselves at the door to compete.

Tonight, she puts the guard down.

A medically retired Division I fencer, Team Captain, founder of EmpowHER, President of @buckeyespectrum, Athlete Ally 2025 Chapter of the Year recipient, Big Ten LGBTQ+ Equality Symposium presenter, U.S. Surgeon General mental health meeting participant, incoming Clinical Psychology doctoral student, and one of the most quietly powerful advocates in collegiate athletics today — Miranda joins us at Play for Joy to speak to what it means to be both things at once. The athlete and the human. The competitor and the whole person. En garde and finally, fully, at rest.

This is for every student-athlete who has ever been asked to choose.

Tonight, we choose everything. Play for Joy — A community-centered space at the intersections of sport, identity, and creativity.

Liberation. Healing. Belonging.🖤

Tonight. Doors open. Come as you are.

Who’s keeping score?

Jadon Delano spent years finding out — as a Division I gymnast at The Ohio State University, competing at the sport’s highest collegiate level, chasing a perfect ten in a discipline that measures everything in tenths of a point.

Then the routine ended.

And the real work began.

As a filmmaker, musician, and creative director, Jadon has spent the years since asking the questions his athletic career raised — about movement, identity, purpose, and what remains of you when the scorecard disappears. His self-directed docuseries The Score captured his final 100 days as a Buckeye athlete with the kind of honesty that only comes from someone willing to turn the lens on themselves. His music explores self-improvement and consciousness as an underrepresented lane. His return to long-distance running is not about medals. It is about presence.

Tomorrow, Jadon joins us at Play for Joy — a community-centered space at the intersections of sport, identity, and creativity — to speak to what it looks like to even the score with expectation, trade the pursuit of a perfect ten for the persistence of passion and purpose, and find radical self-love waiting on the other side.

This is for every athlete who has ever been defined by a deduction.

For every creative who found their voice after the competition ended.

For everyone who knows that access to and through sport was never really about the score.

Tomorrow. Let’s get into some good trouble 🖤

As a transgender man, military veteran, athlete, coach, founder, and community organizer, Giovonni Jordan Santiago has spent his life showing up in spaces that weren’t built for him.

We are honored to welcome Giovonni Jordan Santiago as a featured speaker at Play for Joy — a community-centered exploration of sport, identity, creativity, and the ways they can open pathways toward healing, liberation, and belonging.

The kid who was counted out before getting a chance. The athlete who suited up anyway. The founder who built what didn’t exist when his community needed it. The veteran who returned home and turned personal experience into lasting change for others.

His journey reminds us that showing up—again and again, with courage, purpose, and joy—is its own kind of championship 🏀🏳️‍⚧️

Nobody wins unless everybody wins.

It’s a Bruce Springsteen quote we’ve carried for years. It’s the idea you can’t fully win if the person next to you is still losing.

According to the @trevorproject’s 2025 National Survey, 36% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered suicide in the past year. 44% who wanted mental health care couldn’t get it. And young people in accepting communities attempted suicide at less than a third the rate of those in unaccepting ones.

The data points to something we already believe. That community, empathy, and the willingness to show up for people whose experience differs from your own are survival infrastructure. Every person who feels seen, accepted, and held by the people around them is a person more likely to still be here. That’s what we’re building toward.

This year, for the first time, we put it on a shirt in collaboration with @goodtroublecollective. Comment and we’ll send you the link to grab yours. by @goodtroublecollective

Coach Karen Dennis didn’t just build champions. She built people ✨

45 years. 12 Big Ten titles. 8 Olympians. Head Coach, U.S. Women’s National Team at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Three Halls of Fame. The first woman in Big Ten history to lead a men’s program to a conference championship sweep.

And still — what has always mattered most to her is the human on the other side of the finish line.

We are honored and humbled to welcome Coach Karen Dennis as a featured speaker at Play for Joy — a space built at the intersections of sport, identity, and creativity. A space for athletes, coaches, creatives, and community members to reconnect with what sport was always meant to be.

Beyond performance. Beyond productivity. Beyond the finish line.

Get in good trouble with us 🖤

Sport has never been just a game.

It has been survival. Resistance. Healing. Community. Identity. Joy.

The Scatter Joy Project & Good Trouble Collective are coming together to honor that truth — and to build something new from it.

We’re creating an intentional, community-centered space at the intersections of sport, identity, and creativity. Conceptualized for athletes, students, coaches, creatives, and anyone ready to reimagine what sport can be outside of systems rooted solely in performance and productivity.

For those who have ever felt like they had to shrink to compete.

For those who found themselves — or lost themselves — through sport.

For those who know that joy is not separate from justice — it’s essential to it.

Access to and through sport. Radical self-love. Collective care.

We can’t wait to get in good trouble, necessary trouble, with you 🖤

Grateful to help hold meaningful space at the 2026 Inclusive Sports Summit, hosted by Recreation Services and Colorado Athletics at the University of Colorado Boulder 🦬 🏔️ @inclusivebuffs

Huge thanks to DaWon Baker (He/Him) and Anthony Price for thoughtful program design and coordination, and to future Dr. @timothyfbryson for the early encouragement and support in getting the session proposal across the line — always walking.

As an openly queer, neurodivergent human living in Ohio and finding purpose at the intersections of identity and sport, this experience provided affirmation, structure, and a platform to persist in authentic excellence despite the challenges of the past year.

Welcoming permission in the pivot by seeking joy as a form of resistance ✨ @thescatterjoyproject
