Did you know that on average food workers in Travis County make 30% below what is considered a living wage? Austin has the lowest tipped minimum wage in the United States at $2.13 per hour. Good Work Austin is working to change that by providing training, advocacy, and support for local businesses. Donate today at www.goodworkaustin.org/donate and make a difference. #GoodWorkAustin #GivingTuesday #ServetheServers by @goodworkaustinorg

We need your help spreading the word!

Good Work Austin is officially expanding our Healthcare Access Program from 25 to 110 food and beverage workers this year.

That means 85 more workers will have access to support paying for their health insurance premiums, including eligible workers in Travis, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, and Williamson Counties.

When we launched this program last year, we wanted to help food and beverage workers access affordable healthcare and learn more about what they need to stay healthy and financially secure. What we heard from participants made it clear just how meaningful this support can be.

For some, it meant finally getting preventive care they had put off for years. For others, it meant being able to afford medications or see a doctor without worrying about missing work or paying a bill they couldn't afford.

Now, we want to make sure every eligible food and beverage worker who could benefit from this program knows about it.

This is where we need our community's help.

Know a restaurant worker, bartender, chef, dishwasher, server, barista, caterer, or other food and beverage worker who might qualify? Share this post. Tag them. Send them our way.

Applications open October 15 at www.goodworkaustin.org/healthcare.

Help us get the word out to the people who keep our community fed. 🫶 by @goodworkaustinorg

šŸ“ Wingman Kitchens in East Austin

I am SO excited to announce our first pop-up series!! šŸœ This is a community partnership with @wingman_kitchens and @goodworkaustinorg, a nonprofit serving food workers here in Austin. We’re donating 10% of our proceeds to Good Work Austin.

I’ll be honest - I’m equally excited and nervous!! This is our first time running a series like this, so I fully expect there to be learnings along the way. Things might not go smoothly, and that’s okay; that’s part of the process. We’d love your support, and we’d also kindly ask for your grace as we work through it all 🧔

Earlier this week I also had the honor of being invited back by the City of Austin Small Business Division to speak with the newest graduates of the Business Skills Certification Program, where I got to bring in and share my Pad Thai dish, speak about my business journey and promote this very pop-up series. Full circle moment 🄹

We’ll be posting reminders as the dates get closer. Can’t wait to see you there šŸœ Stay tuned!

We’re excited to share that Good Work Austin has been selected as a We All Benefit 2.0: Building Economic Stability grantee by St. David’s Foundation @stdavidsfoundation !

Through this three-year investment, this funding will allow us expand our work helping uninsured food and beverage workers access affordable health insurance and premium assistance.

Food and beverage workers are essential to our community, yet they have the highest uninsured rate of any occupational group in Travis County. This funding will allow us to build on the work of our Healthcare Access pilot and reach more workers with the support they need to navigate coverage options and connect to available resources.

We’re honored to be one of 39 Central Texas organizations selected for this $41 million investment in economic stability and public benefits access.

We’re grateful to St. David’s Foundation for investing in organizations with trusted community relationships and a commitment to making systems more accessible for the people they serve. We’re excited for what this next chapter will make possible for Central Texas food and beverage workers.

Your ability to pay shouldn’t determine the quality of food you get to experience.

Austin is home to an incredible food scene. Unfortunately access to that food and the care that goes into preparing it depends on what you can afford.

We believe it shouldn’t.

That’s what makes our partnership with The Other Ones Foundation (TOOF) @toofound so meaningful.

Through Community Kitchen, local restaurants prepare high-quality meals for residents at the TOOF operated Southbridge Shelter. Restaurants get meaningful business. Food workers get paid work. People experiencing homelessness get to enjoy the same incredible food that Austin is known for.

One of those restaurants is local favorite Chi’Lantro BBQ @chilantro. Their team gets meaningful catering business and paid work for their food workers, while shelter residents get to enjoy a delicious meal from one of Austin’s beloved restaurants.

As Chi’Lantro co-owner Hope Furst put it, ā€œIt’s a true win for everyone involved.ā€

Since Community Kitchen launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 60 Austin restaurants have participated, providing more than 2 million meals to food-insecure Austinites while investing more than $10 million back into local independent restaurants.

This year alone, we’re on track to provide more than 200,000 meals.

Because everyone deserves to experience the quality, creativity, and care that make Austin’s food scene so special.

Good food should connect us, not divide us..

A huge thank you to Boni’s @bonisbaratx and the Austin Wine & Food Foundation @winefoodfdn for an incredible We Do Good Work tour this past Sunday! We had such a wonderful time gathering around great food, wine, and good work.

Some of our highlights: The seafood paella, phenomenal homemade bread, and of course, the wine. šŸ·

We were lucky to have Sarah Weeks, Executive Director of the Austin Wine & Food Foundation, guide us through a tasting of Spanish wines, and to hear from Boni’s owner, Jess Maher, about her experience providing healthcare for her workers. Jess shared how the COVID-19 pandemic underscored just how essential access to healthcare is for restaurant workers and why she remains committed to making it a priority.

This time together was a meaningful reminder of the people and stories behind the food we love, and why creating healthier workplaces matters.

Thank you, Boni’s, Sarah, Jess, and Austin Wine & Food Foundation for welcoming us in and sharing your space and your stories with us. ā¤ļø by @goodworkaustinorg

We truly can’t do this work without you.

The reason Good Work Austin is able to offer free healthcare access to local food and beverage workers, provide free culinary training to people looking for a pathway to a good job, and advocate for a stronger food industry in Austin is because people like you choose to support this work.

Your support makes these opportunities possible for the people who keep our city fed.

If you want to help us raise money to keep doing this work, join us this Saturday, September 26, from 1–3 PM for our next We Do Good Work Tour at Boni’s @bonisbaratx, in partnership with the Austin Wine & Food Foundation. @winefoodfdn

We’re heading to Spain for the afternoon with Boni’s owners Jess Maher and Todd Duplechan, with wine education from AWFF, Spanish paella, and incredible wines selected especially for the event.

The best part? 75% of every ticket sold directly supports Good Work Austin’s programs for local food workers.

Come for the wine and paella. Stay for the good work. šŸ·šŸ„˜
