On this episode of Young Hos Get Political, I took my folks on a scavenger hunt to learn about New York’s incredible organizing history.

Huge shout out the Office of Mass Engagement, @weorganizenyc, for getting thousands of New Yorkers out to organize, even on a cold and rainy day.

Experiential learning has a reputation for being heavy to plan. The data disagrees.

Nearly half of these lessons went from blank page to live on the same day. 22% within the hour.

Two moments in the year make participation hard for opposite reasons. Teachers seem to use the same tool for both.

August and September are the busiest months for launching experiential lessons in our data, together about a quarter of the year's total. Then there's a second peak in May.

Those two moments have opposite problems. In September you've got a room full of people who don't know each other and a culture that hasn't set yet. In May everyone knows each other fine, and the attention is wavering.

Turns out the same format works on both.

Starting something is easy. Finishing it is the part that tells you something.

A lot of engagement research measures the first minute: did they log in, did they click, did they show up. This measures the last one.

Across 16,761 Experiences run by K-12 educators, fewer than 2% of students gave up early.

When teachers design experiential lessons, they overwhelmingly make them social.

Finding 2 of 5 from The Student Participation Report...

Across 16,000+ Experiences run by K-12 educators, 76% of students took part as part of a team rather than solo. Team or solo is a setting the teacher chooses when building the lesson, so this is thousands of educators making the same call.

Here's what the number doesn't show: teams often share a single device. So 76% is counting accounts, not kids. The real number of students collaborating is higher than we're able to measure.

2,009,622 pieces of student work. We counted every one.

Across 16,761 Experiences run by K-12 educators over a full year, students made photos, videos, written responses, and location check-ins. Most of it was shot with a camera pointed at something real: a hallway, a lab bench, a classmate reenacting the French Revolution.

The part we keep coming back to is that none of this is survey data. Nobody was asked to rate their engagement from 1 to 5. These are counts of what students actually made.

Students arrive with their chapter. Sit with their chapter. Leave with their chapter.

Then a Goosechase hit the Tennessee Junior Classical League State Convention. Different schools teamed up on Missions, took ridiculous photos, and got competitive fast.

One student: "I talked to people I would never have talked to if it weren't for Goosechase."

Sharing this one from student and TJCL President Carson, who watched it all unfold 🪿
