I’m gonna do a solo show playing JOA songs at @babysallright Nov 23. First time in lotsa years!

That’s a thing I used to sometimes do long ago.

This is NOT acoustic. One of JOA’s primary operating principles was that we never really did the quiet/loud thing. To express dynamics we would instead get sparse/dense. & Doing that depends on the sustain of an electric guitar ringing out.

Old timers will confirm JOA was always a completely different band live than on the albums. So this is just another version of that.

Like if the albums were paintings—w/ different albums using different color palettes— these solo shows are like line drawings or charcoal sketches. & That palette unifies a cross-section of songs from the entire catalogue.

I did make an album of this style of set— “Firecracker in a Box of Mirrors” (2015). But like a couple albums around that time it was a weird limited release, limited distribution, zero publicity. I’ll put a link in my stories.

It feels good to be working in this way at the moment where every show I play feels special & singular. It’s very different than playing the same set over & over for months at a time as I’ve so often done before.

& Assuming organized human life on earth survives (which frankly isn’t a bet I’m about to make) I’m excited to eventually get back to playing the same set 100 times /year. But for now this feels right & this’ll be a fun one.

God knows my old clothes sure don’t fit so this is as close as I can get to dress up as one of my old selves.

Grateful to @unitingentity for initiating this & to the excellent @wendyeyes & @more_eaze for playing w/ me by @gootiming

Uniting Entity + Baby’s All Right present a special solo performance from Tim Kinsella, playing songs from the Joan of Arc catalog on Monday, November 23rd.

Tim Kinsella is a Chicago-based musician and writer who served as the primary facilitator of the prolific music and art collective Joan of Arc from 1996 to 2019. Throughout their career, JOA openly questioned song form and language, playfully restructuring their sound through strains of post-rock, experimental folk, sound collage, and electronic abstraction. Their conceptual humor, unusual creative logic, and visceral (sometimes improvisational) lyrics laid the groundwork for today’s American indie avant-garde. Beyond JOA, Tim has fronted the bands Cap’n Jazz, Owls, and Make Believe. He currently performs with his partner Jenny Pulse as Kinsella & Pulse, LLC, and has authored a half-dozen books, including his latest novel “Danny B”.

more eaze is the project of composer and multi-instrumentalist Mari Rubio, whose music blends everyday sounds, acoustic textures, and electronics into rich, layered compositions. Wendy Eisenberg is a songwriter, guitarist, and improviser combining poetic expression with adventurous guitar work. Together, they’ll reprise an unplugged set of their solo material, which came together spontaneously during a power outage in Chicago this past summer.

It’s been a fun few yrs occasionally circling back to our amorphous noise crew Who Is The Witness? We approached it differently each time & never knew wha to expect.

We’ve finished our 1st studio album & are all pretty thrilled w/ it so in keeping w/ the upside down logic that has guided this band since Day 1, we’re packing it in & calling it a day

Playing one final show at @elasticarts Saturday night, opening for our original drummer Jon Mueller —who you may likely know is The Best— all part of the elastro festival, each act accompanying a video

So if you’ve ever been curious, this is it

Make Believe ‘Of Course’ came out 20 yrs ago today on Flameshovel Records (CD) & @polyvinylrecords (LP)

Outraged & fried by The War on Terror, JOA responded by cos-playing as Black Flag for a few yrs

I suggested the name “Make / Believe” but got outvoted on the slash & I always thought the name was whatever w/out the slash

We practiced 40 hrs/wk when home. We played 200ish shows annually. I adopted the persona of a pro wrestling heel, which confused the humorless dimwits

We spent a yr writing & re-writing our first album “Shock of Being,” playing all the songs live a million times before recording live in the studio w/ Albini

But for whatever reason the recording didn’t click. & The album art was intended to be stills from a stage play re-enacting a live performance of a dollar bill, but that also didn’t come across

So in contrast, our 2nd album ‘Of Course’ was written very quick. It was well-known back then that one of us got 10 wks in an Oklahoma jail for things getting wild at one of our shows. So we wrote this album in the wks between sentencing & incarceration

3/4 of us lived in a loft w/ 3-4 friends that was our base of operations for yrs. But we decamped to caPn jazz’s old practice space—my mom’s basement—to write this one in 2 wks. We made decisions quick & didn’t rework the songs to death

We recorded at @electricalaudio again but w/ @normaphone this time, which was more relaxed cuz Greg’s more of a peer than legendary Steve could ever be. Again no overdubs

& The obtuse album art was also jettisoned, replaced by a simple sketch of a moment of evolution, drawn in jail, motivated by frustration w/ small-minded Oklahoma/ US bullshit

These songs became the core of our live sets for the majority of our existence. People ask about Make Believe reunion shows, but if you were there or see live footage, it’s clear that doing that shit again is physically impossible

Those yrs basically living on tour were the last tours in a different world, pre-smartphones. The story is told in my book of tour diaries “All Over & Over” available at Featherproof.com.

The book even has an index of hand-drawn maps. I’ll put a link to the book in my stories. by @gootiming

My new book Danny B is out TODAY! If it’s not in your local bookstore, please ask them why not

It’s been 10 yrs since my last book & I’m just gonna tell you exactly what I’m trying to do here cuz obviously we don’t live in a book-reading world like we once did so I’d rather help explain how to understand it than be coy & hope people pick up on it

The story is over the top & sensationalistic. & It’s very close to the true story as told to me by the main character & it includes all the tabloid thrills: sex, drugs, punk rock, dead bodies, motorcycles. The narrative is sorta 90s noir

But its form is set in direct tension against the adrenaline that thrills like this are most commonly used for in entertainment. There’s a structuralist method to how it’s told, like a Haneke movie or maybe even Robbe-Grillet, like a lot of the action happens in-between the scenes

But the edges are softer than that. I was thinking of it as little puffs that dissipate, like smoke signals; images from dreams you can only half-glimpse in the morning; ancient Chinese poetry like Li Po

Which basically means there’s a lot of white space on the page. & I wouldn’t have been drawn to telling this story in a more conventional form & I wouldn’t have dared to suddenly try my hand at poetry about the mists of rocky waterfalls— It’s the tension between the form & content that interested me

I started work on it in 2014. I can’t guess how many thousands of hrs went into sculpting it since then. It’s sparse, just 23k words, down from I dunno… 8 million?

& Up until the very last proofread, I was pretty sure it sucked & I’d screwed it up. & I dunno how these things happen, but now I think it’s really good, like I really did make the thing that I set out to make

Endless gratitude to @dannybelrose & @featherproof_books

Here’s me & Danny w/ a pizza somewhere in southern OR maybe 2012? & Last time I saw him last yr

Chicagoans join us at @real_rainboclub 10/25. Me & Danny will DJ the Jinx Scene Soundtrack; I’ll read from the book; Danny will answer questions; & @tj.fuller whose new book is also out now on Featherproof will also be reading from his new book

My 1st novel “The Karaoke Singer’s Guide to Self-Defense” was released 15 yrs ago today.

It started w/ an alphabetized list of body parts & I spent months writing for hrs every day, free associating whatever came to mind re: that day’s body part. Then when I reached about 120 pgs I read it back & Frankensteined characters & their backstories out of this sprawl of disconnected body part stories & only then did it occur to me that I could be writing a novel.

So then I spent some wks making a compulsive constellation of interlocking cliches. You know, like there’d be a hinge word that 2 cliches had in common & weaving the 2 phrases together would twist the meaning of both cliches.

So that’s how the story emerged. I was still in schoo when I started it & Jesse Ball was my advisor & he once told me that I had “the least efficient creative process that he’d ever witnessed”. & I still consider that one of the finest compliments I’ve ever received cuz wtf does “efficiency” have to do w/ the joyous process of bringing something into being out of nothingness?

The first year working on it I was calling the book “Dead Dad & Divorce.” Then for the next yr it was called “Fuck This, This Sucks”

One time I covered the floor of my entire apartment w/ index cards to sequence the scenes, but I got lost somewhere in the middle & had to leave the cards out & tiptoe thru them for wks.

Eventually I moved into my dad’s empty unsold tiny condo to make myself finish it. I brought only this nightstand to work on, a wooden folding chair & a sheet to sleep on the floor. Stayed locked in there 3 months to get it done & it took me quite a while to de-internalize after that.

(This is one of the first couple photos I ever took on my phone)

Very grateful to @featherproof_books for publishing it! Never could’ve imagined how entwined our fates would later become

& Thanks to @robertryan323 for drawing me a custom shower head w/ a cloud of steam that looks like a dick & balls for the back cover by @gootiming

My friends, I cannot stress enough that you should really come see this one-time, 16-channel thing that @stevereidell & I have made, this Friday @elasticarts

Steve is a genius & I suspect that this is maybe a kinda high water mark for both of us

It’s 3D music & it’s an epic fuckin musical journey.

& When they say the CLEAT is a 16-channel system, that means like you know how a stereo has 2 speakers ? This is written for an octopus of stereos

(or maybe 2 octopuses of speakers is a better analogy)

I wish we could make pieces for this 16-channel system all the time, but instead I’m gonna suggest we make this an annual 9/11 event

Tickets $15 at the door. Music starts at 8

& Then of course go see @socialcontainer at @hideoutchicago afterwards ! by @gootiming

Me & @stevereidell had the idea last New Year’s Eve that it’d be fun to make something together for the CLEAT system at @elasticarts & have been chipping away at it since then

The CLEAT is a 16-channel speaker system (Chicago Laboratory for Electro-Acoustic Theater)

So our piece can’t be performed anywhere else & this is really the only chance to experience it.
It’s cool! You really should come to this one-time thing by @gootiming
