We’re celebrating the release of Tim Kinsella’s new novel, DANNY B., with the inspiration for the book: Danny B. himself. In addition to hearing all about Danny’s days in Portland, OR, we’ll also have a guest reader from Portland, OR: TJ Fuller! TJ will be reading from his new collection, with a bunch of stories set in the Pac. NW—and we’ll have a bunch of books available to purchase on the cheep. Plus, who doesn’t love hanging out at Rainbo? Git yr old asses out on a Sunday Funday night and join us.

Uniting Entity + Baby’s All Right present a special solo performance from Tim Kinsella, playing songs from the Joan of Arc catalog on Monday, November 23rd.

Tim Kinsella is a Chicago-based musician and writer who served as the primary facilitator of the prolific music and art collective Joan of Arc from 1996 to 2019. Throughout their career, JOA openly questioned song form and language, playfully restructuring their sound through strains of post-rock, experimental folk, sound collage, and electronic abstraction. Their conceptual humor, unusual creative logic, and visceral (sometimes improvisational) lyrics laid the groundwork for today’s American indie avant-garde. Beyond JOA, Tim has fronted the bands Cap’n Jazz, Owls, and Make Believe. He currently performs with his partner Jenny Pulse as Kinsella & Pulse, LLC, and has authored a half-dozen books, including his latest novel “Danny B”.

more eaze is the project of composer and multi-instrumentalist Mari Rubio, whose music blends everyday sounds, acoustic textures, and electronics into rich, layered compositions. Wendy Eisenberg is a songwriter, guitarist, and improviser combining poetic expression with adventurous guitar work. Together, they’ll reprise an unplugged set of their solo material, which came together spontaneously during a power outage in Chicago this past summer.

Cap’n Jazz - Analphabetapolothology 2xLP compilation 1998 (2010)

One of the most important and influential emo bands probably ever. This record compiles their discography into two LP’s, excluding a handful of tracks only available on the CD. Every single song has a feeling of spontaneity and chaos that can’t be tamed. The beauty in the rawness and creativity of all the songs collected here is rivaled by very few. The intricate fingerpicked noodlings and the skull-rattling cranked guitar and the screamed poetry belted out by Tim Kinsella is always a mind blowing listen, especially live, which was one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever been to. They have played a number of unbelievable and legendary bills. Just in the little booklet inside the record, there’s fliers of them playing with bands like Ezra Pound, Los Crudos, Pegboy, Sparkmarker, Heavens To Betsy, Lungfish, The Smoking Popes, Indian Summer, Still Life, Braid, Current, Gauge, and so many more. After Cap’n Jazz, a lot of the members were a part of other important groups as well. Davey in The Promise Ring, Tim, Mike, and Sam in Joan Of Arc, and Mike in American Football. Cap’n Jazz’s legacy is in my opinion one of the greatest and most important legacies of a band ever, and their music is timeless.

friction/capn. jazz - nothing dies with blue skies (1995)

this is such an amazing little split record, and one that feels almost perfectly captured by its title. “nothing dies with blue skies” immediately makes me picture one of those beautiful summer days where the sky is blue and vibrant, the sun is warm, and everything around you feels a little more alive. there’s something so bright and fleeting about this record that makes it feel like a snapshot of a specific season. whenever i hear this record, i think of being outside on a perfect summer afternoon with nowhere else i need to be. just blue skies, warm air, and wanting to hold onto a moment because you already know it won’t last forever. there’s something really beautiful about how such a small record can evoke such a huge vivid feeling. shoutout my friend ira for this pickup.

the last slide is a photo taken by me that reminds me of this record.

SATURDAY! We’re excited to once again host the Elastro A/V festival, an event featuring audio and video installations / performances. This year we’ll consolidate into a single evening, so please join us! FRIEND LESS is a project by prolific percussionist/composer Jon Mueller. It’s two recent EPs, Energy Rippers and Logic of Relics (with Bundy K. Brown and James Plotkin) aim to provoke the heart, mind and body through an unorthodox approach to rhythmic patterns. In performance, the pieces from Energy Rippers lean on a system of AIR (Acoustic Improvised Rhythm) using drums and voice to achieve a similar effect. Tonight Jon will perform alongside video work from video artists Kaveh Soofi.

Elastro AV Ensemble is a first time meeting of artists curated by the Elastro team. Tonight we’ll have Ayanna Woods, Norman Long, Ro Lundberg, Rin Peisert, and Camille Casemier on video.

Who is the Witness? is a psychedelic sound unit with Jenny Pulse, Whitney Johnson, Tim Kinsella, and Eli Schmitt. They will perform alongside a video piece from Flor Garcia.

Performances will begin shortly after 8pm, Saturday 10/10!
