It’s Independent Bookstore Day! @rakestrawbooks is THE place to go for signed copies of all my books, including The Cartoonist’s Club! If you’re in the Bay Area you can visit them in person, but they’ll also ship signed books right to your door.

Rakestraw is also hosting my final event of the spring leg of my book tour, coming up on Saturday May 3rd. You can find links to purchase tickets both in my bio, and on Rakestraw’s website. A portion of each ticket sale goes to the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation—their school district just suffered massive budget cuts, so even putting a small amount back into the community feels good. When was the last time Amaz*n did that?! I died first!!

I had such a BLAST over the last few weeks celebrating the release of the Baby-sitters Club Super Special: BABY-SITTERS ON BOARD graphic novel! @robochai and I met the sweetest readers, shared the stage with some of our favorite Baby-sitters Club graphic novelists, and were even lucky enough to do a super special event alongside our dear editor Cassandra Fulton (@seaeileen), and Ann M. Martin herself!

Drawing a BSC book again felt like coming home, and sharing these characters and stories with so many fellow fans is truly a dream come true. And not just that, but collaborating on a book together with Gale, one of the greatest cartoonists of our time?! 9-year-old Raina would be so utterly geeked that grown-up Raina gets to do this for a job.

A pizza toast to all our incredible tour collaborators! Fellow BSC adapter-illustrators Arley Nopra (@leecheedoodles) who joined us in Toronto and Gabriela Epstein (@_pichikui) who joined us in Austin; bookstore hosts @lindentreereads, @andersonsbookshop @novelneighbor, @bnunionsqnyc, @bookendsnj, @indigoburlingtoncentre, and @bookpeople; our publicist Seale Ballenger (@brotherballenger); the entire @graphixbooks team; all the gorgeous venues, the hard-working STAGE CREWS, the dozens of volunteers who worked their butts off, the brave kids who came up and read with us on stage, and everyone, EVERYONE who came out to share in the BSC joy. Old video of the inks for one of my title spreads from Guts (@graphixbooks, 2019). Underdrawing is a combination of light blue Prismacolor colored pencil and Papermate Sharpwriter pencils. Inking tools are Windsor & Newton Series 7 no.2 brush and Dr. Ph Martin Black Star matte ink. Paper is smooth Bristol board.

Nowadays I do all of my layout and underdrawing digitally (switching between Clip Studio and Procreate for thumbnails and layout workups), but then I print out a blue sketch and pencil analog on paper. From the pencils up, my work looks the same as it always has!

This is my 20th year as a published author! It’s fun to see how things have changed, but also, how much has stayed the same!

Today’s the day: BABY-SITTERS CLUB SUPER SPECIAL: BABY-SITTERS ON BOARD! is in stores!!! @robochai are on the road meeting readers, sharing peeks behind the curtain at our process for adapting a graphic novel together, and talking about friendship!! This book is SO close to my heart, and I’m so happy it’s finally out in the world!

Thank you to the ‘cartoonists club’ who helped us bring this one to life: our editor @seaeileen, colorist @charmgardens, inker for my chapters @cavetoonist, letterer Jesse Post, designers Natalie Padberg Bartoo and Phil Falco, the team at @graphixbooks, and of course…Ann M. Just a few more days til BABY-SITTERS ON BOARD sets sail!!!

There are still a few tickets left to see @robochai and I at our events in Austin, New Jersey, and Burlington, Ontario—not too far from Buffalo & Niagara Falls, for pals with passports! We are so excited to see you all! (Palo Alto, Chicago, St. Louis, and NYC are sold out!)

Everyone else, don’t forget to support your favorite indie bookstore or comic book shop when buying or ordering a copy of the book. It’ll be on shelves Tuesday, September 15th! If there’s not a store near you, bookshop.org has you covered! We love our indies, who have been champions of our comics since the early days!

Notes:

I did the thumbnails and layouts for my pages digitally, then printed the blue layouts onto Bristol board. I penciled analog, and then worked with @cavetoonist who inked my pages digitally in Clip Studio (Ray also inked The Cartoonists Club!).

Since half of the book was drawn by Gale Galligan (@robochai), they had their own process for penciling and inking pages…perhaps we’ll do a collaborative post at some point to show how we worked together to create one seamless story!

@charmgardens colored the whole book! K is amaaaaaazing, and I’d been eager to work with them for quite some time.

Congratulations to Mark Tatulli, aka @markheartlio, this year’s National Cartoonists Society’s Cartoonist of the Year! Mark is so, so deserving of this award, and so beloved of this community. I’ve got several of his strips framed and hanging in my hallway at home, next to other pieces of original art that mean a lot to me. It was such a joy to celebrate his big win, as well as all the other cartoonists who took home Reubens last night!

Being nominated was truly one of the highlights of my career, and sharing the evening with my Scholastic family, and my partner Ryan, were all I needed to feel like I won every award on earth. This has been such a beautiful weekend full of old and new friends, longtime heroes, and celebrating my favorite thing on earth: comics! by @goraina

This one is special, because it belongs to both of us. @_scott_mccloud is a special person, he’s so important to the comics community as a whole. THE CARTOONISTS CLUB was a labor of love, a project that could only exist because of Scott and his work, and the way he thinks and communicates, and I am SO lucky to have him as a friend and collaborator! Kids are lucky to have a book of his to read. And now, we are lucky to share an Eisner award for the book. What a good night. by @goraina
