When Apple gave birth to Goji, I had no idea she was even pregnant. I walked to the back of the pasture on Christmas Eve because the cows were a bit more vocal than usual and there was this little guy lying there- helpless and covered in afterbirth. Fortunately, his mom and big brother were there looking out for him. Highlanders, like other cows, are highly protective of their calves, but Apple was gracious and allowed me to do a checkup on him and he was healthy. Goji, like all the animals at Little Apple Ranch, will be a lifelong lawn ornament and never end up on a plate.

Pumpkin loves to lounge! Whenever I bring her inside to get out of the cold rain, she makes herself right at home. We’re having historic floods here in Northern California (which we need) and the silver lining for me has been a having a little extra time with Pumpkin in the house. Downside is she hums nonstop when I’m on work calls and she has been pulling clothes out of the laundry and making a pile of them in the kitchen.

New baby alert!! This little boy alpaca cria was born today at noon. I brought him in for his checkup and now he is out in the barn with his mom, dad, and sisters. Sticking to the plants/vegetables/herbs theme here at Little Apple Ranch, send your name recommendations so we can get this guy a proper name.

A little peek into my life from the other side of the barn.

Most people here know me for alpacas and ranch life. What they don’t see is the other half.

I build technology inside and around the court system.

My brother and I built a tool that finds sentencing errors at scale. Cases that were “done” but weren’t right. And thanks to his hard work as public defender, now they get another look.

Our application Justice Audit is already helping people get a second chance. At the same time, it’s saving taxpayers millions by catching mistakes early instead of letting them compound.

Objective on the farm and outside it…Build things that actually matter. Read about it here: https://bit.ly/4mh6V6H

Meet the newest members of the farm fam, Wally and Buck (walnut and buckwheat), 5 month old Valais Blacknose lambs. I brought them by the ark for a visit before they head up to their new forever home at the ranch. These guys have the coolest personalities- they’re like fluffy puppies with horns!

Oh what a life you lived, Brodie.

You touched so many people along the way. Strangers became friends because of you. Your gentleness was the same whether it was toward a child, a baby chick, or a newborn lamb on the ranch. You carried a kindness that disarmed everyone and made the world feel lighter.

You changed me in ways I’ll never fully put into words. Everyone who met you walked away a little better.

On your last day, we went to your favorite spot. You waded into the water one last time and let me know it was time to go. At sunset, you passed peacefully in my arms. I buried you nearby, and will plant a western redbud tree there with its heart shaped leaves to carry your memory forward.

I will never stop missing you. But more than anything, I will always be grateful that we chose each other. #bestdogever #goldendoodle by @gowithnoah

The 3 amigas: Rose, Bluebell, and 2 week old Kukui are baby rockets in fluff suits. They regularly play tag with their annoying 2 year old brother Truffle. - it’s a regular toddler nursery over here!

Pepper loves to eat directly above her new baby and of course that results in the little girl being completely covered in orchard grass and alfalfa.

Giving our newest baby girl her first health check 🩺🦙 One day old and already full of attitude. Strong heartbeat, bright eyes, and legs like springs. She’s officially part of the herd. Name ideas?

The river that shaped my childhood turned deadly last week.

A flash flood hit Kerrville, Texas killing dozens, destroying homes, and sweeping away animals. Some of the kids who died were daughters of my classmates. Among those lost were daughters of my classmates and others our family knew well.

My mom is on the ground as a grief counselor doing everything she can, but they need help. Here’s where to send real support:

🐾 Kerrville Pets Alive : frontline animal rescue
🔗 kerrvillepetsalive.org/donate

🧰 Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country: local flood relief
🔗 communityfoundation.net/flood-relief

🛟 Texas Search and Rescue (TEXSAR): deploying K9, drone, and rescue teams
🔗 texsar.org

Grateful for people like @robertearlkeen1 who’ve stepped up for Kerrville.

A culvert collapsed and trapped one of my baby lambs. I got him out, and his leg was clearly broken. No vet could come, so I improvised: pool noodle, heavy cardboard, and tape. Brodie kept him calm while I built a cast. When the vet finally showed, they approved the whole setup.

He’s already back with his mom, getting milk and healing fast. Soon he’ll be out in the pasture full time again. Not every rescue looks polished…out here we just kinda get it done! Oh and I’ve decided to name this little guy Dandelion, which reflects resilience, tenacity, and adaptability.
