Unearthed history. I recently dug up a few of these 19th-century Chinese stoneware soy sauce jugs. While it looks like a rustic piece of art today, this rugged “brownware” bottle has an incredible backstory.
Hand-thrown on a potter’s wheel by folk artisans in Southern China during the Qing Dynasty, these durable jugs were filled with sun-fermented soy sauce, tightly sealed with wax, and shipped across the Pacific in the mid-to-late 1800s. They were a vital taste of home for the Chinese immigrants, miners, and railroad workers who helped build the American West.
Finding something that traveled thousands of miles across the ocean over a century ago…and survived perfectly intact underground is an unbelievable feeling. It is amazing how a simple utilitarian grocery item can connect you directly to the hands of someone living generations ago.

This is my brother Noah and Brodie, they drove me down from the Bay Area after my back surgery last Tuesday. Brodie was given a short life expectancy with advanced lymphoma cancer, given like under three months, so my younger brother is taking him on a cross country road trip to see friends and family that Brodie has made throughout his life. I’ve known this little guy since he was a puppy, he used to pee excitedly when he would see me and eventually that stopped, and the wet visits were replaced and filled with love and enthusiasm. I don’t think there’s anything harder than when we have to let our furry friends go, but we have to remember all of the Sweet doses of 100% love from them that they give us. Safe travels Noah, you can follow his journey across the USA here ❤️ @gowithnoah

Rose and I took a spin around the neighborhood today to say hi to neighbors and friends. A bit over a week old, I rarely handle babies, but she needed some help with her umbilical cord… so I let her join me for lunch
