In a class on Monday night, we were invited to think about an ancestor or two that we could invite in close during our month together. Fondly flipping through my small envelope of dearly beloveds that I’ve sat with during past months of Remembrance, this photo practically sang out to me.

I’ve always adored it and the reminder that all 3 sisters were nurses. From left to right, it holds my maternal grandmother, Verna Catherine, her big sister, Loretta Elizabeth, and the sister between them, Hilda Louise.

As I was quietly gazing at it… at them… that evening, tears welled as I remembered that, with them being nurses (probably in part because their mother died of TB when they were all in their teens), that means that all three of them have a deep heart for healing.

*tears all over again*

I couldn’t be more thankful, delighted, and so deeply moved. I look forward to spending this holy time of remembrance in their circle of tender, loving care.

I am happy to report that over here, there are now lights, heat, warm veggie soup, and to sweet hubby’s great delight (and relief) football!

There’s a big Georgia Bulldogs game this evening. 😉❤️🏈🖤

As predicted, our power went out about an hour and a half ago due to the outer bands of Hurricane Isaias washing through. The power grid we’re on is one of the lowest priorities so it may be out for a while (as in days).

Yesterday morning I stocked up on batteries, purchased a new power bank for charging our devices, and picked up my grocery order. The rest of the day I caught up on laundry and housekeeping.

So, we’re ready.

Whispering prayers for all those who are affected.

Do you know the lovely poem, Saint Francis and the Sow, by Galway Kinnell? It’s one of my all time favorites.

Saint Francis and the Sow

The bud
stands for all things,
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness,
to put a hand on its brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;
as Saint Francis
put his hand on the creased forehead of the sow, and told her in words and in touch
blessings of earth on the sow,
and the sow began remembering all down her thick length,
from the earthen snout all the way
through the fodder and slops to the spiritual curl of the tail,
from the hard spininess spiked out from the spine

to the sheer blue milken dreaminess spurting and shuddering

Happy Feast Day of St. Manna! 💗

I am smiling warmly as there is story behind this lovely saint that I’d like to share with you.

This particular run of feast days in a row is my very favorite of the entire year. When I first began honoring and celebrating it, there were a couple of days in the middle of the 8 that I didn’t have a saint for. With there being so many saints and knowing that there are usually several saints to choose from for each day, I went a-lookin’.

I first discovered St. Jerome for Sept. 30 and happily tucked him in with the others. 🦁

For October 3, I found St. Menna. As I read about her, to my GREAT delight, I discovered that she is also referred to as St. Manna!! Yay!!

Manna was my word of the year for 2023. My special word continues to be a tender reminder that just like when the Israelites were wandering in the desert and Manna would fall from the sky each day, I, too, will receive the “bread from heaven” that I require.

And, just like with the Israelites, I will only receive today’s supplies (of nourishment, support, etc) today. I won’t receive tomorrow’s supplies today because I don’t need tomorrow’s supplies today.

When (not “if”) I get a little anxious, Manna reminds me that I can always come back to leaning into the trust that just like every day before today, I will indeed be provided for.

So back to our dear saint of the day. When I tried to find more info on her, there really isn’t much more available. I’m smiling big as that’s just fine with me.

Just knowing there is a St. Manna is a gracious plenty for me… today. 😉

Happy Feast Day of St. Therese of Lisieux! Also fondly known as The Little Flower, one can always tell it’s her by the roses in her arms.

When I learned as a teen that she had been very sick as a young woman like I was, I chose her name for my confirmation name and asked her to watch over me. Smiling warmly as I believe she continues to do so.

It delights me to no end that 30 years later, I discovered that my maternal great-grandmother’s name was (is!) Theresa so “Grammy T” was named after her, too!

Happy Feast Day of St. Jerome!

Legend has it that a fierce, roaring lion entered St. Jerome’s monastery. While the others (understandably) ran away in terror, Jerome calmly approached the lion and gently removed a thorn in the lion’s paw. From that day on, Jerome and the lion remained faithful friends.

This story about Jerome, who was known for his grouchiness and sharp tongue, speaks to me of hope and redemption. As I do at times, I wonder if Jerome had trouble taming his temper, too. Whether the story is true or not, I am struck by how Jerome was able to meet another in their searing pain and tenderly befriend them in the midst of it, offering care and healing.

What if the lion is a representation of his (and our own) temper and this story invites us to turn tenderly towards ourselves and the needs that our feelings are pointing us to?

Well, wouldn’t that be something?

When I discovered this tender depiction of St. Jerome and his dear lion friend by Scott Gustafson, it was love at first sight.

Today is the Feast Day of the Archangels! Also known as Michaelmas, traditionally, Michael (How like unto God), Raphael (Healer of God), and Gabriel (Strength of God) are the archangels named. As many do, I like to fold in Archangel Uriel (Light of God) as well.

Sharing a blessing:

This blessing rises on the wings of the archangels.
May the archangels surround you, uplift you, guide you, and heal you.
May you know their luminous presence at every season of your life.
