On 10/1/2026, I did something I wasn’t sure would happen for decades; after 6 years and 1 month I had my port removed!! It was done under general anesthesia due to complications I had with getting it placed!

In September 2020, after spending months in denial and begging my doctors, and the universe to intervene and stop the rollercoaster I was on and change the trajectory of my life. However that didn’t happen and in the start of September 2020 I had my second central line placed after a major PICC line failure.

For months my doctors worked so so hard to figure out the complex nature of my conditions and my “Multiple Autoimmune Syndrome”. I required years of high powered anti inflammatory IV meds, hormone therapy for my beyond broken thyroid, and immunosuppressant medications to aid in stopping my body from attacking itself. Despite these treatments I was still highly symptomatic and really suffering from the other genetic immunological conditions - there wasn’t a future in which myself, nor my doctors saw a life for me that didn’t involve a central line. I had near constant need for medications and spent most of my time connected to either an IV pole or a pump that went in a special backpack that I had running 24/7 for months at a time.

Then finally, I got a miraculous break. I no longer needed a liquid diet which made me stronger. Then I stopped needing fluids as often and some of my most difficult diseases slowly moved into some form of remission. I started utilizing more oral meds, made major lifestyle changes for my mind and body.. and now here I am making this post.

I woke up from surgery sobbing. The nurses came running over with worry and I said “No! No! These are tears of relief! This chapter is over.” And peace, joy, disbelief, and hope washed over me.

I’m still recovering from the procedure which took over and hour cause I had so much tissue built up around the port in my chest that they had to do a lot of “ripping and tearing” of internal tissues. But oh my goodness, thank you God, my family, friends, doctors, specialists, and every single person who played a role in me getting to where I am today. Thank you God for this miracle. taken in Portland, Oregon by @graceharestad

Words I never imagined I would be typing here on this page… but tomorrow morning… I AM GETTING MY PORT REMOVED!! There was a period of time I was so, so, so sick that I couldn’t picture any sort of future, let alone a future without a central line. But by the grace of God, a lucky miracle, the stars aligning? The right medications, a lot of really hard work in physical therapy, enduring brutal surgeries to correct structural problems with my body, and working extremely hard with a therapist, I am no longer reliant on my port-a-cath.

So tomorrow, under general anesthesia, I am saying goodbye to my port! Most people have it removed with twilight sedation; however due to the way my body reacts to local anesthetics and medications to relax the central nervous system, and the way my port is placed my medical providers and surgeons decided this is what is best for me in my case.

When I got the call that my health insurance approved the “surgery” I was overwhelmed with emotion and began to sob tears of relief. The last six years have been full of challenges and incredibly unpredictable. I have had a PICC line, a few months of daily peripheral IV’s, and then the port placement that was full of complications and took well over 90 minutes to complete (which is NOT typical for a port placement). My line was also very heavily stitched to my chest wall due to the fragility of my tissues and being higher risk for my line/port to flip. My specific port has also been recalled for life threatening complications and getting this thing removed is the biggest relief and gift, I can’t even begin to explain the amount of joy (and anxieties) about this removal. I know not everyone gets this chance.. but this is life 2.0 and I am not taking any of it for granted.

I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated tomorrow!! Thank you to my friends, family, and doctors for the support, planning, research, treatments, and patience that it’s taken to get to right now. Thank you God for this life changing miracle. taken in Portland, Oregon by @graceharestad

A love letter to the summer I got my spark back;

I found joy again! The kind that makes you realize why the world had to be so soul crushingly dark for quite some time. I have the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, they text me back, I’m never too much, I’ve taken on the role as auntie Grace to some of the most wonderful tiny humans I could ever imagine! I got to meet one of my internet besties and see one of my favorite musicians of all time perform live! Through grueling hard work in physical therapy I am the strongest I’ve been in over half a decade. My brain is the kindest it’s ever been. I have two kittens who have filled a spot in my soul that was left a gaping wound and they make sure I laugh each day, like belly laugh out loud. My relationships are flourishing in ways I didn’t know possible. I’m living a life I was told would be impossible but I said “f*ck that”, and I’m taking back my life. I feel like every prayer I’ve ever had has been answered. This beautiful life wouldn’t be possible without the hardship I endured and I’m so.. grateful for the struggles that lead me to now. I’m greeting autumn with joy over fear for the first time since I was 17 when my life was flipped upside down at the hands of a greedy man child. I believe my guardian angels are guiding me into the best years of my life. I was told my 30’s would be better, I just never saw myself getting to them, and now that they’re here? I’m just so glad they’re here. I’m so glad I’m here. Healthier than ever, singing again, writing again, reading, drawing, leaving my home independently. I have friendships where people find time for me amongst the chaos of their own lives. I’m just very lucky and I don’t know exactly how I ended up with such a beautiful life, but I’m certainly not taking it for granted ever again. Even on the days the sun doesn’t shine quite as bright… I am happy and I am free; this is 30 🩷 to the forces that be, thank you. Thank you God. I feel the sunshine in a way I’ve never felt it before, how beautiful is that? taken in Portland, Oregon by @graceharestad

ANNOUNCEMENT! I have officially decided my book content is going to live on my main page because books and reading is such a HUGE part of my life and the healing journey I’ve been on; physically and mentally!

Went to the library with my bestie girl yesterday and picked up some good finds, one of them we both read together yesterday in one sitting and OMG 😳 it was so entertaining we were having such a good time yelling about what in the hell was going on and the chaos and madness! Highly recommend finding friends you can spend an afternoon reading with!

The other books I picked out now have A LOT to stand up to based on yesterday’s read, but I’m excited and I’ve already started another cause I’m a book-aholic… could be worse lol.

Hope you enjoy a few moments of chaos watching this reel and if you have any good horror book recommendations leave them in the comments pleeease and thank you!! taken in Portland, Oregon by @graceharestad

There are lots of new faces here since I uploaded a reel about grief a handful of days ago so I thought it was a good time for a little updated introduction!✨

I am Grace! My friends and family call me that along with G, Gigi, Geeg, and the funniest - Gmoney. I’m a Cancer sun, Sagittarius rising and an Aquarius moon, and my horoscopes are scary accurate.

I was born and raised in Portland Oregon amongst the trees and the months of endless rain and fog, ideal cozy weather!! I have two kittens who keep me on my toes named Karma and Aura who I love so much I feel as though my heart could explode at any given moment lol. I have Celiac disease, hEDS, PMOS, and much more.. but after nearly 8 years of being diagnosed I have learned how to separate my identity from my illness and let my world expand in ways I never thought possible!!

I am a sucker for a good quote. I love to read and I have a deeper love for writing. I also enjoy drawing on paper or my iPad and have a surprise coming soon that I can’t wait to launch 🤭

I’m a sensitive girly, member of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as legally disabled (but again I don’t focus on that too much). I like to spend my emotional energy focusing on what I CAN do versus what I can’t, and it’s made my little world a happier, lower stress place 🩶

I have so many beautiful friends in person and online all over the world that I’ve been able to connect with thanks to this little app! Those humans have brought so much hope and joy to my lil corner of the universe.

If you’re new here, welcome to my world! And if you’ve been along for the wild ride that has been my life for awhile, thank you for staying. Thank you for the kindness, patience, and respect you’ve shown me in some of my darkest hours. I really don’t know where I’d be without a lot of you! (Tagging some of the humans that keep my world going round! So maybe you can go show them some love!)

I’m always listening to Noah Kahan who I just saw live recently with my internet bestie @ultravioletsilence 🍋 And idk where I’d be without her. My best friend @meggily.weggily has helped me transform my life into one that I love so dearly!

Thanks for reading! Xo, G 💕💫🦋 taken in Portland, Oregon by @graceharestad
