Pilgrimage to the enlightened monks of the Thai forest.

1-2. Hearts opening at almsround.

3. No touching between perceived men and women at the monastery.

4. Kyle forgot the no-touching rule and put an arm around me for this photo, which caused me to jump and shriek and then giggle uncontrollably.

5. Five-mile hike through the forest, which went way longer than intended so a monk shouted at us to hurry up or the wild dogs would come out at night and eat us for dinner.

6. Handing out bananas for one of my morning chores.

7. Collecting dana on orders from Luang Por Ganha.

8. Receiving teachings from the arahant.

My new novel LOVE OF THREE LIFETIMES follows two blips of sentience who find each other again and again across miles and centuries. A temple dog who adores her monk master. A sugarcane farmer in love with a traveling singer. A servant girl becomes a Buddhist nun and takes on a caring disciple, and eventually finds the highest happiness of all.

A story about rebirth and karma. About practicing for less suffering, more peace. About love—and about letting go.
