today is my birthday, and i’ve never really been someone who enjoys celebrating myself, but this year feels different.about nine years ago, i tried to end my life. i never thought i’d make it to this age, let alone to a life so full of music-making and creation. my life since isn’t a simple story of “i got help and got better,” but something much more complicated: a long, stubborn decision to keep going, for music.it’s still not always easy. but i’m here. i’m making music. and along the way, i’ve found people who have become deeply important to me.thank you to everyone who’s encouraged me to celebrate getting older. here are some snapshots of the last year of my life.and happy mental health awareness month. stay alive. by @gracynnotblu

this valentine’s day,i send love tothose who seek out half love, because real love is unfamiliar,and feels dangerous, who flinch at gentleness, who wait for the other shoe to drop, who leave before they can be left.to the adults who were not loved consistently as children, who mistake chaos for chemistry, and silence for safety.to those who drift toward the familiar fire, who apologize when they get hurt, who season scraps into sustenance,and shrink their hunger for a smaller plate. i send love to the ones who learned early that love could disappear without warning, that affection comes at a price.to the ones still unlearning the language of survival, that kindness is not a trick, that love does not have to bruise.i send love to the ones doing the quiet work of staying, softening, believing,slowly, that they are worthy of a love that stays when they don’t alwaysknow how to.i send love to the ones still learning that love is not something you should have to earn.•••#poetry #writing #valentinesday #abuserecovery #complextrauma by @gracynnotblu

picking 20 squares to sum up the year feels impossible, but here’s my best go (personal edition)1. hitting one year of living here was a highly emotional and reflective moment. this is me on that day, writing and writing (as i do)2. @ashton.livesay being an absolute rock in my life3. josh @joshuakzook, hannah @hannahbethzook, sarah @sarahlavonne, dakota, and riley feel like my LA family4. spent a lot of time at war with bugs in this particular office (anything for another rock in my life this year, @ohdoylewhereartthou )5. giggin6. one of so many tiny apartment crash outs (i moved at the tail end of the year to a place with cabinets but im sure i’ll find something else to crash out about)7. more giggin~keyboard edition~ i was a frequent wearer of an all black outfit with leather pants8. started taking care of myself more and ended up becoming a gym goer9. i will continue to laugh at my own mental illness until it kills me. this banger of a combo was documented in my endless footage of @gracynblu production 10. these kids were such a joy11. one of many odd gigs from the year, i’m glad that wig imitating my natural hair got some use12. spent a lot of time reconnecting with my violin after putting it down for a few years13. these were 100000% mental health investment14. more singin (ugly church fit edition)15. got sooooo artsy craftsy16. car camped in malibu state park for a couple gigs because traffic is crazy and a bitch needs to sleep; felt sooo peaceful waking up in the woods tho honestly17. arguably the weirdest gig i did all year (though i can think of a few close seconds): singing arias on the literal street in a venetian costume for a half marathon on my birthday18. digitized of a ton of home videos that i now have for forever :,)19. hey ill take it20. sweet messages from the kiddosalright this is my final recap goodnight by @gracynnotblu
