this valentine’s day,
i send love to

those who seek out half love,
because real love is unfamiliar,
and feels dangerous,
who flinch at gentleness,
who wait for the other shoe to drop,
who leave before they can be left.

to the adults who were not loved consistently as children,
who mistake chaos for chemistry,
and silence for safety.

to those who drift toward the familiar fire,
who apologize when they get hurt,
who season scraps into sustenance,
and shrink their hunger for a smaller plate.

i send love to the ones who learned early
that love could disappear without warning,
that affection comes at a price.

to the ones still unlearning
the language of survival,
that kindness is not a trick,
that love does not have to bruise.

i send love to the ones
doing the quiet work
of staying,
softening,
believing,
slowly,
that they are worthy
of a love that stays
when they don’t always
know how to.

i send love
to the ones still learning
that love is not something
you should have to earn.
